Be aware that you wont be able to send emails from your paradise account if you are outside the Vodafone network.

We have them for work and I have had no luck trying to get it to work when I work from home (on 2 Degrees).

Each time I have called Vodafone Business Support and from the different conversations I have had with them over the last 6 months, there is no reliable solution to fix this as the server is very old and no plans to replace/fix it.

That's because their retarded mail server is only an open relay accessible only on VF network. There is no way to authenticate against it from outside the VF network.

Seriously though, if you are on an ihug or paradise email address you are bad person and should work to rectify the situation very quickly.

I disagree. I have had the address since the early 90s and trying to move it would be a nightmare. $5 per month is cheap. Also for many with elderly relatives the change would means you ie someone not them would pretty much need to sit there doing the change for them so again $5 a month is cheap. This is just 2 examples.

If setting up an email now then yes a non isp method is the best call but if you have an address you have had longer than some people using this forum are old then there is a good case to pay $5 a month and keep using it. A blanket answer is not always the best or only one.

another +1 for "its not that hard".

in gmail

make all outgoing email be sent from your new account (so if someone emails you with youre old one, you will respond with your new).
flag all emails from your old email address so you can quickly see what youre still getting from your old address (updating these services etc as found)
after 2 months or so (or sooner if u like) add a auto responder with your new email address

You'll be surprised how quick this process really is. I kept my old @ihug one for quite a while, then i moved my parents ones off @ihug as well and that took about a month for them.

Family and friends can generally contact you other ways if your email stops working (phone, snailmail, facebook etc).

All the main services you use should be quite easy to change over (trademe, power company etc) and you'll likely get emails from them making it easy if you missed one.

seriously, ditch ISP emails. theyre stupid, they lock you into one provider or force you to continue paying your old provider just for email.

say its too hard, is just lazy IMO.

also the benefits of a proper webbased email service like gmail

ability to instantly search through all old emails
all emails will be kept basically forever (you can delete them off course, but with so many GBs free theres not much point to delete most emails)
you'll never loose the emails (when i use to use outlook it was a PITA to transfer emails from one machine to another)
access your ALL your email from anywhere

yes you can still use gmail with a pop account from an ISP, but if youre doing that, you should just be using gmail anyway.

It seems that any email addresses and even NZ domain names you had registered with Paradise continue to work and get renewed, even many years after one stops paying money to Paradise/TCL

Is this feasible to do with your Paradise account if you are moving to a Gmail address? https://support.google.com/mail/answer/21289?hl=en

I set it up for our old xtra address and it works perfectly. Means I never logged into the xtra account and just dealt with emails as they arrived in Gmail. I setup a category to flag it for special consideration. Took maybe 2 months to change the addresses I had missed/cared about.

It also migrated all old mail which was nice.

I'm running gmail and paradise emails currently.

Had gmail account for a few years now and have been slowly migrating things over as I can be bothered. Mostly for ease of being able to reply to emails on the go as opposed to Paradise where I could read anywhere but only reply at home.

Should probably make more effort to migrate the remaining accounts and website over and probably leave the daily deals spam going to Paradise to ignore. :-)

Is this back prior to when Telstra bought out Paradise and everything got moved under the "Telstra" banner? The implication I had from the FB post was that they don't touch the Paradise.net.nz system unless they have to - sounds like its a bit creaky...

If its anything like ours, there was a long time where email mailboxes were not linked to specific customer accounts. So if you close an active internet subscription account, there are no notes referring to an associated paradise or clear net account. Its just a theory but I reckon that sort of information may have been lost through the mergers, or was never kept in sync to begin with.

I agree with it being a bit creaky - no secure smtp or no smtp on a port other than 25 is a giveaway that any IT admin hisses when he is asked to go near it.

If your an elderly person, it can be quite a big problem. Well they usually perceive it to be.

The solution to that will be solved over the next 15 years as they die off.

The only legitimate reason is if you run a business and have been handing out business cards for the last 20 years with your paradise email address, then yes it can mean lost income. But that is slowly going to sort itself out too over time.

I still use Xtra. In fact my PW is my Paradise PW. But I guess Xtra is now Yahoo, so I'm safe!! :-)
