Yes, I guess it was the PORT OUT/PORT IN distinction I was missing.  And still, there are some exchanges that are exempt from PORT OUT?  I didn't realise it worked like that.

I suppose PORT OUT is the important thing, encourages competition.  If Telecom (or whoever) doesn't PORT IN certain numbers, they are only hurting themselves.

Back on topic and taking all the suggestions I have a couple of questions if you guys want to proof for me:

1.In the new place there is a phone line for the alarm monitoring system

2.We could use this phone line for fax and alarm monitoring, plus XNET Flood plan.

Questions:

1.On the Flood Plan, managed option - what happens if you go over the contracted allowance? Will it slow down? It is a bit more expensive than the current TNZ plan they have, but they would have full speed instead of the current 128 Kbps so worth the couple of dollars more.

2.Shall we get a professional to install a splitter for the alarm on that line?

3.In the same line of thinking, perhaps get this same person to attach the PAPT2 at the entry point so the entire house gets the VoIP from the existing wiring?

4.Should we think of getting a second line (XNET Fusion perhaps) just for the DSL?

Ideas?

1. Once you hit the agreed value - your connection throughput will be reduced to 64kbps.
2. Defintely if you are running DSL on the line that the alarm is being feed (alternatively there are cheaper DIY options)
3. It depends on who does the work. Most techs dispatched for splitter install will do just that.
4. Again it depends. Probably a more cost effective way is to have landline (for fax and alarm), Xnet flood and have your voice VoIP landline go through that rather than having a naked DSL line and a landline (did I read it correctly?).

I'd....

Migrate the go onebill mobiles onto a new account number from the TNZ landline in order "to monitor their usage better"

Call VFX or your chosen provider (TCNZ inHome!) and get them to connect a new PSTN connection + DSL ready for your arrival.

Port the old number to a VoIP connection like VFX or 2talk (or iTalk for the daring)

The result, two mobiles still working, a PSTN line with the provider of your choice for fax and alarms and you retain the old number. The only extra charge is about $10 for the ported VoIP number.

One point to note, Alarms are not supported due to the nature of a lot of different modems that may or may not work,
we are recomending IP based alarm systems only, if you are running only VOIP services,
you will also need to consider battery backup for equipment as well for you router, AlarmNZ do a IP based system that can assist with this.

They've got a third line as well - which is good because it will help moving things around.

Last question though - can we use their current Xtra DSL modem/wireless router with other providers or is there anything in their firmware that prevents this?

Yes, there is nothing on the modem that will prevent it from connecting to another service. But remember that when you hard reset them, they will default to Xtras self service username (user@xtrabb.co.nz).

You can flash it with generic or AU firmware instead of NZ firmware, which removes the Xtra screen.  I did it on a different model, but should work the same for this one.  It just means that you need to check all the NZ-specific settings which your ISP gives you anyway, instead of only entering the user name and password.

Followed by NZ generic firmware.

It seems you can't load the NZ firmware into a Xtra firmware configured D-Link, but you can load the AU firmware. However, once you have loaded the AU firmware, it will then accept the NZ firmware - interesting!

The newer Xtra supplied modems do not have Xtra branded screens. All they have is the default ADSL settings and online registration username preprogrammed in.
