if the GPON is 2.5gb down and 1.5gb up, total segment saturation is easily done if a few tie up all the bandwidth.

AS OF NOTE: i install fiber and all the 100/20, 30/10 200/200 etc have a CIR of 2.5, so your not guaranteed anything more than 2.5/2.5 on any plan.

I get the feeling Cable will handle gigabit fine, they have installed d-cmts which going off comments in the old thread can handle the speed

and, if people start moving to UFB to fill that up, then the cable network will start experiencing empty network syndrome - it will rocket and will be lightly loaded, without the massive emphasis on equipment to police connections so that you get only what you have requested... down to the byte (cough cough ufb providers).

I just hope the great minds in Vodafone UK product understand that not everyone in NZ is an utter moron needing to be saved from themselves with a techinicolor or similar, and that we will just get the closest thing to a media converter (which is what the cisco cable modems are really). I'm sure they wont, but worth repeating that many high paying users just want bridge mode....

I was an affected cable customer for a long time, but see no point in keeping threads alive when the issue has been mostly resolved. Sure VF treated their customers with contempt, but we need to move on and report new issues rather than dwell on the old.

This thread also has no real use imo.

Not all customers were impacted at peak time, Christchurch customers were better off than some of the Wellington customers that were on the HFC congested nodes so why should a blanket credit be offered?

Many customers that called and complained did get compensation as stated in the locked thread

I wasn't suggesting a blanket credit to everyone on HFC, but I'm damned sure that any competent ISP would have some fairly extensive network monitoring in place that could tell it exactly what node's were affected, and when. I work in "mere" large enterprise IT environment, let alone an ISP, and we could tell you that about all our WAN circuits going back some time. If a node was affected during period X, give all customers on that node a credit for that week/month/whatever. But they won't, because it would require admitting that they had issues, knew it, and made a cynical, calculated decision to only give credits to those who screamed the loudest.

I wasn't one of the worst affected, the HFC connection I pay for is in Kapiti which wasn't anywhere near as bad as Island Bay, and I'm personally only at that property for about 5-6 days a month lately. It pissed me off plenty, but never enough to go through the 2 hour wait to talk to a moron in the Philippines who would refuse to do anything anyways.

Who knows maybe I am being unreasonable, but I just can't help feeling that Vodafone have gotten away with shafting a lot of people without any real consequences, and that the cable thread being locked is going to help them get away with that. My internal "scales of justice" says until they make that public apology, they deserve to have everyone posting in that thread, continually bumping it, even if current problems may not be related to the start of the thread. Bad behaviour deserves bad press.
