As others have said its not a Vodafone issue but in my experience 2degrees, Skinny and Spark do not charge for these iMessage activation texts.

If it's that abhorrent to you, why not just turn the services off?  No one is forcing you to use them.  A few cents to activate a very useful service is a small price to pay IMO.  It is not "hidden" you get a warning that activating the service may entail carrier fees.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

As previously stated there was no warning message prior to the charges. You need iMessage to use txt messaging and FaceTime, which is one of the reasons why one buys an iPhone over android so a poor solution. I can appreciate being charged an international txt fee, but not for a hidden txt that Apple sends to a U.K. Network. I would think such a warning would apply to those texts I am intentionally sending. In some ways it is quite creepy that Apple is sending texts without my permission first.

A quick search shows not everybody zero rates the SMS's - there are people ranting in many countries about having to pay.

To some 'unauthorised' Apple networks no doubt, but Vodafone is an authorised Apple carrier, so they should not be charging to receive iMessage activation.

That's what I would have thought too.

Except you don't have to use imessage. You can disable it and just use sms.

Odd, I've always gotten a message similar to the below whenever iMessage or Facetime are trying to activate, you have to accept it before it sends the text.

You can facetime on an email address when I last used an iDevice.

there is a warning when this is done.

Apple is sending the text so complain to them, or don't accept the imessage service and send text messages.

No-one is forcing you to use imessage or facetime.

I agree with OP.

As an iPhone user since 2011 it always irks me when I see this random charge in my bill after a overseas trip. Especially when 2Degrees, Spark and Skinny don't charge this activation fee.
