grasshoper: telecom?s T3G service, offers data speeds of 144Kbps to 2Mbps, while Vodafone?s 3G is claiming data speeds of up to 384Kbps.

Every Vodafone 3G site is HSDPA capable with a maximum speed of 3.6Mbps (soon to be 7.2). In reality this means connection speeds of around 1 - 1.5Mbps

Just in regards to the above few posts Telecom are building a nationwide GSM network and will be deploying 2100MHz WCDMA with HSDPA/HSUPA in every city and other areas of interest. They are *not* deploying a nationwide 3G WCDMA network.

grasshoper: Give me a reason why you would leave to telecom considering that telecom's network is crap, they have crap all network in other countries and their phones are no where near as good as vodafones. The only thing i can think of that is good about them is their pre pay plans txt etc. But even so i would never change to telecom unless it was the only network around!

Excuse me? The CDMA network is a very solid network, that will outperform Vodafone's current GPRS offerings any day, and that’s not to mention the increased coverage foot print that CDMA EVDO Rev A offers over HSDPA that Vodafone currently has in the market place.

It's not all about handsets, but for people like yourself, Telecom are launching a WCDMA HSPA (HSDPA + HSUPA) based network in November 2008.

EVDO is in every major town and city in New Zealand. Is Vodafone's UMTS network in every major town and city?

Seriously..... Its not....

I don't work for either network, but use both networks for work... and in the last few weeks with the 900Mhz 3G cellsites being turned on, the VF 3G network is certainly more widespread than TCNZ.....

But this thread isn't about that now is it ;)

Did I blink and miss something, or is Telecom's GSM network up and running already? I can't wait to give Vodafone the flick. Must not call them names...mmmm

The network is not up yet. But Telecom can supply you with Telecom branded SIM cards and you can use this in any unlocked GSM handset and go roaming. That's why it's no big deal anymore...

I would seriously consider chopping either my Vodafone or my Telecom account if the other provider allowed me to have the other number as a kind of 'virtual' number on the account. Ie. I cancel my Telecom account and have my calls and texts to my 027 number terminate on my Vodafone, as well as calls/texts on the 021 number. Outgoing can all come from the one number.

Possible service here Telco's...I know several people with 2 phone numbers who would like a single device but not loose one of their numbers.

Yes, but how many devices can use it? The reality is that most data devices that are sold at this time are not UMTS900 capable, while Telecom sell Rev A enabled devices.

Its very subjective but I've always found the EVDO network coverage impressive, getting coverage in the oddest of places. Also when faced with a sharp fall back to GPRS - I'd take 1X speed any day.

In any case, this thread is quickly going off topic and turning into a holy telco flame war. Lets focus on the topic, which is that Mauricio has ported his vodafone number to Telecom.

Johnr, please come back to reality. I can spend a weekend in the Wairarapa and use CDMA EVDO Rev A, while Vodafone barely provides a bad GPRS service there. And the same in Napier where we spend a week and CDMA EVDO Rev A was rock solid and GPRS was the only thing available.Talking about is just fair to say Telecom's network is much better than Vodafone.

Naturally, so much so they are moving to the same technology as Vodafone...must just be a marketing thing eh?!?

And for the 5th time maybe, would you like to enlighten us on why you moved from Voda to Telecom? What was the actual reason(s) for the change?
