260k customers already on adsl2 profiles.. No doubt they will be shouting from the rooftops once they actually complete the roll out.

So by that document I can assume the people of St Albans have had ADSL2+ speeds for the last year. Or even myself.. I unknowingly enjoyed ADSL2+ speeds from 23rd of August last year until I left Mt Wellington.

Having ADSL2+ ISAMs active in an exchange isn't the same as providing ADSL2+ speeds. And as Telecom says its merely a technology upgrade, and isn't for faster speeds:

Perhaps someone from Xnet could clarify whether they are really limiting their connections to ADSL1 speeds. If it's true I'm gobsmacked - and in any case, what's the point? What's to be gained from limiting users speed? As far as ADSL2+ profiles being implemented, I was on the understanding these are being rolled out as the exchanges are upgraded.

Well i'm confirming for you now; they are limiting ADSL2+ speeds to ADSL1.

So if you were on an ADSL2+ connection with Orcon, you would get FS, but at that same address if you were with Xnet, you would get half the speed.

Its funny that Orcon doesn't agree with you:

You can only get 24mbps on Orcons Unbundled lines where you are connected to an Orcon port - not a Telecom port.

Broadband customers hanging off a Telecom port are still limited to ADSL1 speeds by Telecom, not Orcon, not WxC.

Well they certainly won't guarantee that adsl2 will grant faster speeds, in much the same way they won't guarantee any level of speed at all on adsl1.

I assure you, once the adsl2 profile is active on a line then the customer can start syncing using adsl2 modulations and has whatever throughput that provides available to them. Of course you wouldn't notice if you were on xnet :p Your modem must also support adsl2.

Edit: And in response to above, slipmat. That's a very recent change to orcons website. I have seen orcon customers get adsl2 speeds across tcnz ports. Wouldn't surprise me if they're now trying to limit them to bolster the uptake of their own adsl2. Regardless, there are still other isp's that don't limit eg, tcl

I have asked this question on a couple of threads and never had an adequate answer

My modem syncs at adsl2+ but my download speeds on my Xnet River plan FS/128 have not changed whatsover over adsl1

Now bear in mind that according to the TCNZ document my exchange [J'Ville] was scheduled have adsl2+ profiles activated 8/2/08

I am waiting to see the next TCNZ update that states my exchange is fully migrated

All that said it would be nice if WxC end the speculation and state one way or another what is going on

Usually when they just keep quiet it means that they are about to make an announcement or waiting for something else to happen before making the statement, and they simply need to get the timing right. (Or they just don't want to say it.)

Out of interest, I was at clients yesterday where they have an attainable/line rate ds of 18000/14000 (Woosh ADSL). I did a speedtest and got a download speed of 12000, so 2+ profiles are active. I must say that overall I have been pretty happy with Xnet as an ISP, I like their progressive attitude, and do feel you must have a good tolerance for grumbly customers to work there (or for any ISP in NZ for that matter).

Attainable downstream of 18000, line rate downstream 14000. I know it's limited to 1Mb upstream, 'tis why I never mentioned it. It's a pity TelstraClear gave up on their cable service, we might have actually been able to get 14000 upstream :-))

Fast upstream wouldn't make it very Asymmetric DSL...

There are other components in the UBS network that provide rate limiting, not just the DSLAM port. Even with ADSL2plus profiles enabled, it's very possible to have an 8Mbps ratelimit configured at the LAC.

Additionally, exchanges won't have ADSL2plus profiles configured on the DSLAM ports (never mind the LAC) until all ports at that exchange are migrated.
