Just found that my modem is syncing with ADSL2+ speeds.
Sync stats: here
But it seems I am still limited to ADSL1 speeds.

What is causing this? Shouldn't I be able to download as fast as my line allows?
I remember reading that Xnet are limiting people to ADSL1 speeds somewhere.
This seems to be the case. Why would they be doing this? We pay by the Megabyte, it's in their best interests for customers to download as much as possible.

I'm hoping that this is just temporary and I'll be getting full speed soon.

I don't see any logical reason why Xnet choose to limit ADSL2+ connections to ADSL1 speeds - it's not like they offer flat rate "all you can eat" plans, we pay per MB so it's beyound me why they do this.

It's likely because Xnet is short on international bandwidth...

Speaking of bandwidth, when will Xnet sort out their international bandwidth issue? What happened to the promises of buying more international capacity?

Have you thought that Telecom might be limiting it not WxC as the backhaul might not be able to handle the extra bandwidth?

It could be... but I'd recommend that one follows the breadcrumbs. I highly doubt it will be all 'backhaul' issues.

Though it doesn't stop certain people suggesting it for international traffic

Probably why they slap in an isam before putting anyone on a dsl2 profile.. Xnet does limit you to dsl1 speeds. A limit thats probably been in place since before people started to realise they were syncing at dsl2 rates.

I wouldn't make too much of a fuss about it. I dont think tcnz have even annouced it as part of a product yet.

Xnet does limit to ADSL1 speeds. I got DSL through them on the same exchange, DSLAM, and router type as my Orcon line and both synced at the same speed, but Orcon's throughput was double the speed. Upon querying this, I eventually found out through their support team that they do infact limit it to 7.6Mbps or thereabouts.

I promptly cancelled my xnet DSL and said I'd be more than happy to rejoin when they provided full speed connections.

Wouldn't this mean that Xnet is in the wrong, for misleading their customers - what they promised is "Full Line Speed" and is the maximum non-restricted speed which your DSL connection will support based on your distance from the exchange. <<--- This is the exact phrase I got from the Xnet sign up page.

So if a customer syncs at say 14000kbps, the Full Line Speed in this case is 14000kbps, not 7600kbps. Discuss.

Legally, yes.

If they say full line speed and then admit to limiting it to less than half your speed, then that is most certainly false advertising.

However, since I generally like WxC as a company and do enjoy all other services I have through them, I chose not to pursue the matter...

So maybe a naive question, but does that mean that if you lived far enough away from the exchange that you had a maximum line speed of 4-6MB with ADSL1, that being limited to ADSL1 speed would be limited to maximum ADSL1 speed rather than what you could actually achieve (ie, you could still acheive a higher speed if you were a good distance from the exchange)?

Your question is kinda confusing but you will not be affected by the limit at all unless you're syncing above 8200ish kbps

Keep in mind that ADSL2+ is not yet officially launched, and thus considered to be trialled so there is no guarentee of anything more than ADSL2 speed. We should get it later this year, though.

That's what I was asking, basically. That means that if you're more than 2km of wire from the exchange, you will get benefit from the newer spec, as you're limited to the theoretical maximum, not achievable maximum.

But people on Telecom equipment with other ISPs such as Orcon get ASDL2+ speeds.
International speeds are slow during peak times anyway, That has yet to come right.
Full speed national would be nice, from Xnets Akamai and speedtest servers etc.

I've been out of the country for a few months now.. but have I missed a big announcement about ADSL2+ profiles being enabled in the exchanges?
Has Telecom (or Chorus or whoever) enabled ADSL2+ now?

Somehow I think not.. Telecom/Chorus would be screaming from the rooftops that "as fast as your line allows" now means up to ADSL2+ speeds.

Of course I'm happy to eat my words if anyone shows otherwise.
