Very interesting. If this proves to be true and the speeds are good, I'll be changing to it.

Anyone have a release time frame?
EDIT: Just read the other thread with the email. Mid may. Can't wait.

What will happen with local traffic? Will we have to start paying for it if we use it during peak time?

okie dokie.

That email helps. Hopefully p2p/torrent users will all switch to that and waiting till midnight to use the internet will be a thing of the past, and I can go to bed at more appropriate times.

XNet: The pricing option that will be available by mid May will offer subscribers completely free and unlimited data usage from midnight to eight in the morning, seven days per week. From eight AM to midnight, they will pay $1.54 per gigabyte rather than the normal $1.02 per gig.

Ah, I was wondering what the incentive was for heavy downloaders to change their habits but now that I see the "free and unlimited" bit, I understand how this will work.

/me wonders if this strategy will mean stricter enforcement of the Excessive Use policy during peak time.

You could always not download so many games, apps, movies, music illegally and that would free up bandwidth. 80GBs in one month holy hell... I am lucky to reach 5GB

looking at the questionaire I was suprised the number of small volume users.
Also wonder if multi-media not p2p is the problem.
Also philosophy does not reflect selling bandwidth, but rather of selling monthly subscriptions. Ideally we all join but use nil bandwidth.
Since we pay for bandwidth, those who use 100 gigs per month should be hero's not villians.
At $1.50 per gig - how does that compare to the market average ?

Just to put it out there, I live with 5 other university students, all of whom are quite heave users, so it is quite easy for us to get up to 80GB WITHOUT illegal activity. I myself use ftp and http traffic quite heavily for my work, both university and part time work.

Hmm.I don't have a specific time when I P2p ,game and downloading and Im still thinking about this new plan

Normally Im asleep by 11pm .

I think that it is good that Xnet are activly trying to fix the peak experience. Because Xnet will pay for internet in the amount of capacity (speed), and not amount of data used correct? If so it might be a win win for Xnet as new customers are going to sign up that only see 'free internet between midnight and 8am' and they are still going to use the internet at other times and pay that extra price. And ofcourse there is still the base price.

If it does attract more users that are only (or mainly) going to use the internet in that time, hopefully it will mean that there is more income for Xnet and then more money (hopefully) to invest in more bandwidth.

Saying this I can still see problems, people complaining that there downloads are going really so during this 'free' period, but nothing can be perfect, and I guess Xnet can come back and say 'you are still getting it for free'

I for one are going to stay on my current fusion plan, as our household mainly uses the net midday to midnight with the odd p2p here and there, but nothing to say we should move to the other plan. Just hope other people do... hehe

Time for Telecom to come out with some new plans to match. Anyone know if Telecom is looking at introducing any new plans soon?

I am just about to ditch Telecom after a really bad "Level of Customer Service" experience I recently had with them.

I remember this getting a mention in one of our forums a few months ago and when MF said he had been talking to Maverick a couple of weeks ago this was what came to mind with me. To me it sounds good I wouldnt mind paying 50 odd cents more a GB

As much as I agree with you, since switching to Slingshot, I've averaged 200MB/day with 99.9% legal downloads (one 5MB MP3 makes up the .1%) with traffic from Pandora, Halo, Joost and Last.fm.

Just stream a little bit, and you've lost 100MB in an hour or less.

I think you will find that will stay the same as I cant see them starting to count your VFX calls as national traffic

well i just got home from work and looks like the wait has ended.

I am now able to watch you-tube like never before at peak times.

and speedtest was 3x faster than normal

hopefully it stays this way
