Fibre actually runs at around 1GBps per strand..
GPON actually has a download rate of 2.4Gb/s, and 1.25Gb/s up. Being a PON this throughput is split over anywhere upto 64 other subs. The headend can provide anywhere upto 18odd PON fibres pre frame (ie around 1200subs), and can be fed with multiple GE or 10GE uplinks.
I would be surprised if there was better than a 10:1 contention allowed for in the uplink, so some bandwidth limiting is obviuolsy applied giving a 30/6 plan.
