Fibre actually runs at around 1GBps per strand..

GPON actually has a download rate of 2.4Gb/s, and 1.25Gb/s up. Being a PON this throughput is split over anywhere upto 64 other subs. The headend can provide anywhere upto 18odd PON fibres pre frame (ie around 1200subs), and can be fed with multiple GE or 10GE uplinks.

I would be surprised if there was better than a 10:1 contention allowed for in the uplink, so some bandwidth limiting is obviuolsy applied giving a 30/6 plan.

yeah theory is pretty much right and reasonably on track Cyril but the commercial pricing for the back haul components has a lot to do with it as well, and these are still being worked through as this is still only the pilot, this is the major component of any business case so it has to be cost effective.

Anyway a bit off track as it this was only to show what the first homes are getting, thinking about moving about 30Km north myself now

, more of these subdivisions will be coming online in both the North and South island shortly.

Good to here the cost of rollout in the subdivision itself is not the cost issue.

Yep 30/6 and 9mS transists to town, I could be happy with that :), and all for less than 100 slides a month!

Of course this is not the first FTTH deployment in NZ, there have been a few others over the last few years. Problem was previously when providers looked at doing their own fibre deployments all of a sudden TCNZ would say "whoops mistake in our quote" to the developer and the reticulation costs for copper were now 1/4 of what was previously quoted.

Never the less there were a few deployments which went ahead regardless. Deployments down in Pukekohe with Counties Power spring to mind. They were not using PON/GPON however so pricing became excessive once broadband ADSL prices dropped significantly.

Out of pure curiosity, what are the customers being charged for the trial? and how much of a cap do they have?
I was on the trial of adsl in 1999, me and a few hundred other user's had the network to ourselfs and no speed cap or data cap for $99 a month (trial lasted 2-3 months). managed about 600KBs out of it, all on my antiquated pentium 200 with a 4gb hard drive, ohh the days.. they then decided to tell us that the retail price was $200+ a month for 400mb, and that was that!!

Meh.

Lets have decent caps / data costs on normal broadband first. I can already see the 1GB plans on FTTH busted in 10 seconds.

Would be very interested in some international speed tests from one of those connections ;)

No this is Telecoms new wholesale fiber product, all new subdivisons being serviced by Telecom are going to be fed by fiber not copper , they are actaully forward thinking and putting fiber infrastructure in the ground now,

Telecom is only developing fibre into subdivisions of around 100 plots or more. So that counts out a majority of subdivisions where land on the edge of towns is slowly developed title by titel rather than large lots bought up by larger companies and developed at one time. So there is still a market for smaller operators to build in fibre seperate to Telecom.

Big issue for many of the smaller divisions, is connecting backhaul. If you have bypassed Telecom then in most areas you have no choice but to go back to Telecom to get hooked up, bit of a catch 22.

I think Lines Companies (power ones) and local councils have a future in these operations, both providing local backhaul fibre runs (seperate to Telecom) and also getting into brownfield overlays when major works (undergrounding power, updating sewer/water) are done.

Cabnetisation of the current copper I think will very much a positive thing for other bodies to get in on the brownfields fibre overhaul, with powercos and councils owning fibre from the cabinets to homes, Telecom picking up the backhaul and OLT in cabinets.
