At the moment its

but during dinner time it gets the same speed as yours.

I realise lately during the past 2-3 days internet has been really slow. When xnet released the torrent plan off peak time was quite fast and I would get at least 2mbps but for the past few days I would get 500-600 same as yours.Somehow it affects my call quality.

If one person in my network downloads a file it affects everyone making them unable to surf any website.

nbroad: Hi NinjaBear,

Would be interested also in what your modem connect speed is and what speedtests to Xnet Auckland show first thing in the morning then during the 7 - 9pm period.

Cheers,
Nigel

nbroad, KShips, ninjabear can you please pm me your account # or phone #. 3 users with the same issue in the same area seems too coincidental to me and i would like to chase this one up myself.

Hi guys,

Just got off a bad phone call.  Was breaking up badly and doing some really funky stuff.  My audio was getting through to the other party way out of order.  Ie.  the other party would ask me a question like "do you like ham sandwiches" then they would hear me reply straight away, "oh, ok" which of course wasn't my answer but was another part of the conversation from a few seconds earlier i suppose!  Weird.

The call was 8.30pm, duration around 23 minutes.
Linksys stats show 169 packets lost, I can forward a screenshot of the call stats if required.
Was on a corded phone that I have borrowed to test as requested.
Speedtest immediately after the call:

Speedtest from this morning:

I hope this gives you a bit to go on.

Cheers,
Nigel

An old ASAM dropping peak time UDP packets?? I've seen that issue before, i.e. the massive delay effect; was the DSL gear dropping packets.

Would this cause the speedtest results we are seeing as well?
Is the speedtest.net test over UDP or TCP does anyone know?

Hi guys,

Update on the faults i logged with telecom, one fault we had a reply that confirmed the exchange was capping on capacity in peak times but they were unable to provide an ETA on when exchange will recieve upgrades to cure this, the other fault they were unable to find any fault, which is odd to say the least as they are both on the same exchange. Have now escalated this through to our wholesale manager at Chorus as both replies should have come back the same and trying to get ETA on exchange upgrade.

Hi Nicholas,

Interesting that when one of your technicians logged a fault with Telecom, this was their response:

Telecoms Response - TCNZ CLOSED 04-06-2008 16:18:00 No known issues on equipment, peak surfing times will degrade bandwidth. Customer is 2.5k from exchange as well

Now you have logged two faults and one comes back with a problem, the other doesn't.... weird!
Good that they have finally owned up to something though!
Thanks for your help on this.

Cheers,
Nigel

I'll just add too this thread by saying that I am in good ol' windless Palmy, and my xtra ADSL, has mirrored these peck time fall offs  about beginning early June, 2008. Perhaps late May.

7am speedtests are 4000/700.  7-11pm we are looking 500/500. And quite sporadic. EG, you-tube wont stream. If I stay up till midnight its generally getting back up there( 2500/600) with 1am often back to 4000/700.

2 months ago the connection was 3500-4000 / 700 consistently.

Shes really turned to custard. Hope its fixed soon. 3.5km from exchange btw.

Its like deja vue when I got the $49.95 Ihug all you can eat dial-up in 1998. If you were "late" home from work and didnt get dialed-up before 6:00pm you were out for the night with busy signals.

We have come such a long way.

Ok guys, doesnt look to crash hot on the exchange front of things. Current update from Telecom channels for you.

The exchange does have high traffic load and very likely to be congested during peak hours. Issue should be resolved by exchage capacity upgrade but there is no plan of upgrading capacity of the exchage yet and we do not able to find any ETR.

Not alot more we can do on this front im afraid until Telecom decide they have had enough complaints about the issue to correct it.

I was also told by the technician that the exchange is congested during peak hour.Nothing he could do other than wait for the exchange to be upgraded.

He did meantion Xnet did something.Change port or something and asked if my speed improved.

Not quite sure what he meant by that .After the visit by the technician I notice the speed is tiny bit faster but still vfx quality is still pretty bad at this time.

Sometimes when I call to an overseas number I don't hear any calling tone.About 20 seconds later my father picks up and says hello which is a bit odd

I've also had the 'no ringing tone' problem.  It's just silent while the other parties phone rings and then they pick up.

I have to say that I'm disappointed about the exchange congestion problem.  All this marketing for blazing fast internet speeds, ADSL2 etc and their exchange drops to 700k at peak times and can't handle it!  It is a bugger when it affects my phone service.

Sorry, rant/moan over.

Regarding Telecom fixing it, what does it take to get them into action?  A certain number of complaints from end users or from their ISP's?  How does the feedback actually get through to the appropriate persons?  Through our ISP on our behalf?

I wonder if the cabnetisation rollout plans will improve things, although that may be a long way off for some of us.

Does anyone have an understanding or can anyone explain where the congestion lies?  Is it one piece of equipment maxing out its internal capacity or is it a link between equipment A and B not having enough bandwidth?  I know it may be a whole lot more complicated than that but I was just wondering how it all fits together, out of interest.

Cheers,
Nigel

700K at peak times?

Pfft. Luxury!

Last night my up was faster that my down. About 400/500.

According to the Cabitisation timetime, my exchange is due to be upgraded in July 2008.

And I just made it by one street. Phew.
