Fantasitc, thanks for your detailed response. I appreciate it.

So, the sceptic in me asks, whats is the down side? If it can hand the audio portion of the call back to WxC part way through the call, then this would seem the ideal solution to me. Why is Asterisk not configured by default to do this, or does it just need a little more configuration on my part to make this work?

How would I configure it so I could try this out?

There is no downside, this takes the audio processing off the asterisk.
As to how to configure it I would ask TonyH as he knows a lot more about asterisk than me.
I know about SIP as I sell and support the Epygi Quadro's ( http://www.3bit.co.nz ) .

Back in here by request.

David - don't assume I know too much more about Asterisk :-P I can be a bit of a jack-of-all-trades at times! (And the proverbial master of feck-all).

Aaron, I would suggest that the number of people who are totally happy with Trixbox in a VM at desktop class with gimped upload speeds are the minority.

I would rather see you on a $50 dedicated 1.5GHz/512MB Celery/P4/AMD from Trademe than using a VM. VMs are great for home non-production setups, and sandboxes.

Even if you just borrowed a box and set it up for S&Gs to see if your latency issue disappears.

I suspect that low upstream bandwidth and your codec choice is the likely culprit, but being in a VM, you just can't discount that as an issue.

OK, I agree :) I have proven to my own satisfaction that Trixbox works, VFX seems to be working for simple calling without any issue. I am probably pushing the envelope of a VM image, so if I want to really use some of the more advanced features Asterisk has to offer, I need to put it on a dedicated box.

So, I have another PC similarly spec'ed to my WHS server. I will install Trixbox on this over the next few days. Will report back my findings for others coming after me :)

Out of curiosity, you imply part of my problem is codec choice. What codec would you recommend? Do you use g729 yourself?

Now I am just trying to source some additional hardware - FXO (for playing with connecting to my existing POTS line), ATA device (I previously had a WAG54GPv2, but it overheated and the router stopped working. Bit useless without it!) Back to the research! Thanks for your input.

WOW... thats all I can say!

Last night a speedtest showed an upstream connection of 3Mbps down and 138kbps up. Not great, but average. This morning a speedtest shows connection speeds of 3Mbps down and 700kbps up - so my Flood connection has kicked in.

With great anticipation, I tried out various forms of call forwarding. Including follow me and DISA with an external call. Boy, what a difference. All latency has gone, the line is crystal clear!

I would call this a resounding success (for now!). For the moment, I'm going to leave the VM ware image running as is, perhaps tweak it by increasing the process priority, and try it out for another week or so.

As you can tell, I've very excited!! (My wife would be rolling her eyes all over the place

) Now I can concentrate on better network hardware instead.
