it's a case of your distance from the exchange plus there is so many people that feed off the same roadside cabinet as you that have ADSL service, there ant really to much that can be done at all

Anything I suggest or say is my own thoughts and not provided by anyone else unless stated

Well, progress has been made.

The Transfield guy came around and here is what happened.

Inside:

1. Plugged his nifty machine into the same phone jack that the modem uses. Finds that the upstream rate is 64kbs, which he says is probably the reason why dropouts are occuring so frequently.

Outside:

1. In addition to the main line trunk that enters the house walls from the junction box, there are two extra lines that someone before us has installed into the loom.

2. He disconnects everything from the main line coming up from the ground and connects a phone jack directly to that.

3. Plugs in his nifty machine to that jack, and finds that the upstream rate there is a shade over 530kbs. 8 times what it is inside.

4. So he says there is a problem in the main (original) trunk in the house causing the problem.

5. Leaves the main trunk dissconected, and reconnects only one of the auxillary lines (the one to my bedroom).

Inside:

1. Plugs his nifty machine to the jack in my bedroom.

2. Machine reports an upstream rate of a shade over 510kbs. Still 8 times what it was before.

I didn't have time to move all the modem gear upstairs and check on the speed, but I will do that tonight and report later.

At least we have found the probable source of the drop-out issue. No, there is nothing else plugged into the main trunk in the house. There is an alarm, but it is unmonitered. He said that this might still be the problem, as it might be hooked into the trunk for such a service.

Note to self: Reconnect everything when we move out!

Well, I'm happy as can be so far. Just setup the gear on the only active jackpoint and here is what my modem has to say:


Item	Downstream	Upstream	Unit
SNR Margin	14	15	dB
Line Attenuation	34	17	dB
Data Rate	8157	944	kbps

All up, around 300% faster on-peak. 6pm and I'm streaming Youtube with ease. Something I've never been able to do.

Maverick, Cameron - thanks very much for your help on this. I'm stoked. Thanks to Coffeebaron and everyone else who has given advice over the last couple of months on our issue.

And this is why IMO adsl should never have being sold as a self installed service.

Good to see ya finally sorted it though. I always full install my customers for Fusion, there are just too many issues that a miss match of phone cabling can cause; and your example highlights this nicely.

Aye you were on the money indeed. In fact, I recall you predicting this more than once. I'm so used to plug and play when it comes to broadband. I'll definately pay for a proper installation next time after this 3 month long saga.

One question I'd probably have to tell the landlord - Is the only way to find the issue with the main trunk to tear it all out and replace? Or does it usually require more testing first?

I'm pretty sure we're gonna get stung for that call-out (he mumbled something about $300 but then he got destracted by his machine and started to tell me how the uplink was 8 times better now, and then I forgot to ask). I'll pass it on to the landlord if I can, but if they're not interested, I'll just tell them that something dire is up with their phone lines, and put the system back the way it was when we move out. (no plans to right now)

I was advised that there is no obligation for a landlord to provide or maintain phone cabling, just like they dont have to provide a sat tv dish or a normal tv antenna.

Tearing out an replacing is the best way to get it 100% right. But there are other ways to still use the existing cabling. I.E. like what the Chorus tech did - find a good pair. The most important part with N-DSL is having that separate dedicated feed to the router. The voice feed back out to the "off net" jack points is less critical, but still can have issues.
I had one install where the VFX line kept going off hook. Cut off all the capacitors from the "off net" jack points and that fixed it.
