tyagi: Given the rapid growth of console gaming, and online gaming services (including download content), it would be great to see XNet partnering with Microsoft or Sony.

Every week, downloads of over 1GB or more are made available on XBox Live and/or Sony PSN. It would be great for these to be free traffic in addition to normal gaming traffic to/from the XBox Live and PSN servers.

I would love to see free traffic with Xbox Live, might actually use it then.. ha. But I guess a lot of traffic would be P2P wouldn't it? and not person to server, please correct it if I wrong

Sony PSN content is considered local traffic (therefore free) as it's on xnet akamai servers, i've DL nearly every high-profile demo i can find for PS3 due to this :)

not sure about microsoft though.

I'd really like official confirmation of this, as downloads from the PSN are often very slow. I'm running an NZ PS3 with an NZ PSN account on a standard XNet connection.

If this is true and XNet can provide improved PSN download performance in addition to it being zero-rated content, they should be marketing the hell out of this service feature.

Yup, they need to make a nice list of what is "free" to Xnet users, be very enticing to potential new customers.
I did ask a little while ago what else was "free" but got the usual Recoil, Akami, Steam "and other stuff" - what other stuff exactly ? :)

Im happy with the GP partnership though, lets me play Trackmania again without chewing up my data.

slow? mine are pretty fast, regardless of time of day. usually around 500kbps regardless of peak/offpeak congestion.

I think you will find that you won't be able to get a list.

Most of the stuff you are talking about is Akamai caching (the game servers are different)

I'm not quite sure how close the relationship between Akamai and an ISP is but I am under the impression that effectively akami controls to some extent what is cached depending on what it requested.

The problem is that content can be moved in and out of the cache, conceivably one day they could stop hosting Microsoft downloads.
How would the end user know? its effectively transparent unless you know how to look at the ip addresses.

At the end of the day I can see it a huge support hassle for them to maintain a list, much easier to leave it as an unknown and for us to be happy that it is there when it is.

Agreed however a definitive list of the xnet controlled servers, recoil and gp etc would be nice

Maverick/Xnet, could I please get some clarification?

What is this "free offpeak" you speak of?

I am currently on "Steam", but on a previous Xnet plan I had free national traffic.

Now I believe I am charged for national but not "local" - is this correct?

So do I get free data during certain offpeak hours?

"Other stuff" entails a few other odds and sods in the data centre - nothing particularly impressive. Nothing that we could list on some sort of marketing thang to the best of my knowledge :).

As to Akamai - Filterer's right. We don't control what gets hosted on the Akamai cache; Akamai does. Hence, there's no way to guarantee that stuff that could be on the servers is on the servers. They're usually pretty good; Windows Updates and things are always cached, and there's occasionally Apple content. It looks like PSN is in pretty high demand at the moment, so a large portion of that should be coming off them.

In terms of a list - GP, Recoil (including a Steam content server), Akamai, VFX, emails, and a news server really are the major ones by a long shot.

ahmad, the new plans have free local, not free national. Local comprises the list above. If you want free off-peak, you'll need to register for the Torrent billing option, which will keep your speed the same, but give you free off-peak (up to 75GiB). Your on-peak cost will increase to $1.50 per GiB if you go for Torrent.

Oh is that option new? I haven't heard of it. Maybe you informed me by sending something to that Xnet email I never check :p

I'm at work and can't check the website (Xnet.co.nz constantly crashes IE at my work for some reason...) so can you tell me a little more?
