There are already quite a few debian/ubuntu mirrors in NZ, such as the one hosted at citylink - The best place to look for mirrors in NZ is here:

Yeah, I know that, but I do a fair few install for others which chews through a fair bit of bandwidth some times!

It's not the speed I'm after, it's the exemption from traffic counting.

Also I find alot of the NZ apt mirrors are unreliable get all sorts of package errors on some of the quicker ones so I tend to use a few aussie mirrors as they work reliably and always have the updated packages I want. Considering I do all my apt-get upgrades from about 7pm onwards xnet could save some peak usage by having some sort of apt mirror.

Although I now use apt-proxy myself :)

I also end up using the Aussie mirrors, and Apt-cacher for local distribution to my PC's.

An XNET local cache would be ideal...

It can't be too hard to implement and would probably save them on international bandwidth in the long run.

I sent a mail to the servers admin with a request to add DEB's (ubuntu's my flavour), but he says that with the data on there already, he simply doesn't have the space.

Any progress from anyone else?

What is the size of Ubuntu (& it's offspring: eeebuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu, USBuntu, MediaBuntu, etc, etc) & it's various resources?
If needs be I'll either buy this bloke a drive on TM, or set up my own cache, if I'm able to lock it down to XN traffic (maybe really the FTP via a XNet gateway)

Maybe have it rsync to citylink.

That may be a anther option: route traffic via some XN gateway/proxy, so all traffic spoofs local (I think this may be crossing the line & stepping on some toes)

Ideas?

As far as I understand it though, Xnet user to Xnet user is not all local traffic. It can be, but sometimes it passes through Telecom making it national rather than local.

All Xnet customer to xnet customer (xDSL) is counted as national usage.

surely there are enough linux users out there for them to WANT to do it?

rally the lugs and anyone using xnet we could create a generic email to send to any lug members and others. who use xnet as their provider.

repos for distros yum, apt, and popular iso's hosted on a xnet only server? im sure there are enough people out there willing to maintain a folder section for their favourite distro.

I've posted a request to wlug & to wicks, but to bite yet

I'm slapping together a home network environment, but I'm still a ways off from being "production ready", but pretty-much all my server'll be doing is pulling torrents 00:05-07:55.
Maybe a streaming server like Jinzora.

It has a 20G HDD, 10 of which I'm willing to sacrifice for an apt-cache, unless somebody's feeling generous enough to donate the required storage. Have an extra ext IDE USB chassis I'd be willing to apply.

Don't think requirements would be over the top.

I'd be willing to set this up if:
* I was to get active (1:1) assistance from someone in the know
* I can ensure traffic is for the XNet network, as I don't think I have the $$$ to pay the bandwidth to act as a global source; unless XN will sponsor me (hint-hint, nudge-nudge. I'll add a banner)

I'm not a n00b, exactly; just a n00b with a few years 'experience' wrestling with linux

10 GB won't go far... see: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/mirror/1

A "full archives" mirror is around 210 gigabytes and is slowly increasing. Archives mirrors are updated at least every 24 hours but no more then every 4 hours.

An "Ubuntu releases" mirror is around 40 gigabytes in size and tends to stay relatively constant in size in order to make it easier for mirrors to plan disk space requirements. It is generally updated only a few times a year so updates are usually performed every 24 hours.

How many users ase any of their 100MB allocated web space on XN?

Maybe have XN users opt to have 50% of that space 'donated' to a mirror hosting solution for those customers?

What's the feasibility of this?

Wasn't aware we had 100 MB web space. Good luck with this.... they can use all mine...

I understand Xnet customer -> Xnet customer is not considered local; therefore I think the only option is for XNET to host a mirror...

i.e. if one of us Xnet customers tried to host data, we the customers would actually end up paying for the traffic twice. The downloader customer, and the server customer..

VFX Xnet customer to Xnet customer is local data as doesn't go directly, rather both customers connect to the Xnet server.
