We know the $5/$7 is really just an arbitary fee and they don't actually pay this to anybody

Along the same lines as the $10 extra a month they used to charge for 4G access (I think that's what the charges was)?

If they're going to increase the fees it would be nice if they actually made changes to their roaming such as not double dipping and charging the daily fee multiple times for shared data allowances.

We know the $5/$7 is really just an arbitary fee and they don't actually pay this to anybody - so it's frustrating when you have shared allowance in NZ such as a SIM in a tablet and have to pay that fee for both devices.

We heading overseas shortly - one primary phone and one shared user - are we going to be charged $10 per day (2 x $5) for using the one plan?

It's per connection not plan so 2 x $5 and this is very clear in terms and conditions

So you expect to use twice as many whatevers (Data/Calls/etc) and only be charged once?

Sounds reasonable.

Not twice the data or calls; the two users share the data/calls etc of a single plan, not two. The total amount of data /calls that they can access via roaming is capped at the same total amount of a single user on same plan.
Eg.
One user (non share) uses 1gb on a 1gb max plan. $5
Two sharers use 500 mb each on the same 1gb max plan. $10.
Same amount of roaming data used on same plan, yet double the roaming charge.
So we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I reckon robbers

The chances that two people would use the same amount as one are slim to non existent.

If you are truly the one couple that would stick to that, then you are paying a whole $7 a day penalty for the 999999999 other couples that wouldn't.

Can't please everyone.

Your logic makes no sense. That’s like saying why 2 individual plans on the same account have to pay $5/day each for roaming. It’s doesnt matter what the set up it - there’re costs to terminate calls/texts/data to networks overseas. If it’s such a big issue then just use one mobile. Hot tip: before you leave for overseas you should forward one phone’s number to the other mobile - that way you want miss any phone calls.

My logic makes total sense. Traditional roaming charges are based on the amount of data used while roaming. On a capped plan, by charging more people to access a fixed amount of data, Vodafone are effectively increasing the cost of data for a given plan. Eg:

Single user. 1GB capped plan. For simplicity, assume all data used over 5 days. 1GB/$25 (roaming charge) = 2.5 cents per MB.

2 x shared users. 1 GB capped plan, assume all data used over 5 days, 1GB/$50 (roaming charge) = 5 cents per MB.

The cost per MB for roaming data for the shared users is double the cost for the single user.

Anyway, it is what it is. Thanks for the forwarding tip, not sure it will help as both will be using data, so 2 x roaming costs will kick in.

What would be great would be if Vodafone followed the lead of their competitors and offered each sharer access to a full data bundle. (e.g on 2Degrees each user on their 40gb plan has access to their own individual bundle of 40gb).

This would solve the whole idea of double dipping when sharers use up the same data bundle when paying daily roaming.
