@JasonParis Maybe he could tell us more and the reason why?

They have 25 MHz in band 1 (aka 2100 MHz band). Given LTE/4G only supports up to 20 MHz in one carrier, it would make sense for them to keep 5 MHz running for UMTS/3G and use the balance of 20 MHz towards a LTE band 1 carrier. Other alternative is to run two carriers in band 1 with a total of 25 MHz.

On the other hand I recall reading somewhere that the government is planning to restructure the allocations for some bands including this one? Maybe you're right that Vodafone is planning ahead in case they lose spectrum in band 1 and need to use all they have for LTE.

@kiwisurfer Vodafone currently use 10Mhz for 3G and 10Mhz 4G and the 5Mhz for Sure Signal so if they use 15Mhz for 4G 2100Mhz then that is a good speed / capacity increase

15mhz for B1 generally... currently.

Must be gutting for those with poor coverage.

We currently rely on ours, but a new spark tower is going up in our area, so we'll switch to spark and I'll look to offload the sure signal.

I suspect this will drive usage of illegal signal boosters

According to Vodafone's rebuttal to 2DM Wifi Calling in this NBR article, the Vodafone network is so good it doesn't need any supplementing with Wifi calling, and now presumably with the Sure Signal.

@tripper1000 I have used Wi-Fi calling around the world and saved quite a few $$$, I think VodafoneNZ are worried about losing roaming $$$ more than anything else

Same. Sure Signal is definitely the only reason our household are Vodafone customers.

Yeah, my post was tongue-in-cheek.

I had a 2talk account specifically for global roaming (it predated 2DM's WiFi calling product). I'd divert my cell to it etc and it wasn't a solution for SMS's of course.

Still 2 Talk is an option for those important incoming call's if you are a V.F. customer unable to get a Sure Signal. Useful if you are at a location where you have WiFi but don't have a L.L. or other network cell to divert calls to.

If anyone is after a sure signal, my sister in law just switched to 2degrees and has a near new unit for sale. any reasonable offer would be considered.

If it was a bandwidth issue, surely they would be outright axing the service, and not continuing to support existing units.
