Foo: Anyone know if you can sign up for this deal and keep your existing phone? It would be great if TelstraClear offered a reduced price for those of us who already have a phone and don't need the Nokia 6275i.

I am also very interested to know if i can keep my current mobile, I have a N95 on a Vodafone contract and don't wish to downgrade to the free mobile they offer. Is it possible to keep your current phone and are there any issues with keeping your same number if you're on a vodafone contract? cheers

Seeing as they're currently using Telecoms CDMA network and you have a GSM phone then no.

Maybe next year when Telecom release their WCDMA network you might be able to, maybe.....

At this point in time, yes (Freetime Telecom included minutes can be used as well).

This may change with WCDMA.

AFAIK TelstraClear do not have their own HLR, something they have stated they would look into with WCDMA, so until that time, Telstra customers are Telecom customers as far as bundled text’s and minutes are concerned. Also note on the TelstraClear website, how photo messaging a Telecom customer is cheap than a Vodafone customer.

Yeah. I just wonder if they will be offering the same deal with other handsets such as GSM ones. Isn't CDMA on the way out?

I don't understand why the media have been taken along by TelstraClear's hype by calling this new service things like 'game changing' and speculating that it could be a big shake-up for the New Zealand mobile market. Even in an article in today's National Business Review, TelstraClear's Steve Jackson is quoted as saying "This is our first entry to the market" -- are we forgetting 029 even happened now?? How is it so very different this time around - last time around it was so low-key that it was barely a blip on the mobile radar, and with barriers to entry like having to have both your home phoneline and broadband connection with them AND having to agree to a 24-month term I can hardly see take-up being much of a threat to the two major players. Really... TelstraClear are creating a storm in a teacup with this and somehow the media have been sucked in.

This is a nothing event, I mean FFS how F old is the handset they have launched with?

This is their third stab at mobile - how are restrictions on who is even allowed to sign up going to give them a better shot than stabs # 1 & 2.

Fail.

Not a colossal fail, but the kind of fail where you did something stupid. Twice. And then you did it again, expecting things to have changed, when clearly they hadn't.

MVNOs, while welcome, and positive, may help trend prices down, but an MVNO is not in a position to "shake up" a market, and frankly, TelstraClear Mobiles' offer just looks a bit plain jane nothing-more-to-see-here-move-on-please.

Can't agree more Tony.

To be called "game changing" TCL really needed to do something different. $20 per month + 29c per minute with no term contracts and no requirement to be a TCL customer. That would have really shaken up the market.

The restictions and requirements of this plan guarantee a big we = fail in it's current form.

To be fair - the phone is actually quite solid and good to use, for an ageing S40 unit. Its one of the better CDMA Nokias in existence.
