Nice little bit of recording in the news piece also:

"TVNZ has so far refused to let Sky rebroadcast its new high- definition channels TVNZ6 and TVNZ7 to subscribers."

I didn't think TVNZ were going to make those 2 HD?

They aren't. It's obviously an inaccuracy in the article.

I think they combined "TVNZ will not allow sky to broadcast the High Definition version of their channels [1 & 2]" and "TVNZ will not allow sky to broadcast their new channels 6 and 7"

TVNZ 2 is already HD on the Freeview DTT platform aaannnddd even once in a while shows a HD program though like TVNZ 1 and C3 it's very rare these days..

Does not help when the current adverts for Freeview HD make it sound like all the channnes are available in HD rather then just 1,2 and 3.

I do hope that Telstra can broker a deal with TVNZ. Seems though that TVNZ are not being very friendly with anyone these days... anyone want freely available epg data??

sbiddle: Being able to format shift content to another device is something we'll never see here simply because it's illegal with our new copyright laws.

Interestingly I was reading an article about cable box PVR's in the US. Apparently the FCC have mandated over there the box needs to have a firewire output port so the user can transfer the content to another device. Of course if the content provider has imposed HDCP then it might not be doable. Another point of discussion was, use the firewire port to actually put the recording on external box so you can at least detach it and move it somewhere else to view content.

Can't see that happening here though.

Bumping this thread, wasn't Telstra going to announce their service by the end of October 08? Like many others here I have been patiently holding off transferring to the Sky HDi service in anticipation of the Telstra alternative... and probably like a lot of folks here starting to get impatient. Give us at least a time frame to work!

It say's they will update us with more information in early 2009 now!

Hopefully some info comes out before years end, I have been waiting paitiently for some news too.

I'm holding out for Telstra but their lack of information is very frustrating.

My TiVo hard drive died today, do I replace the hard drive or ditch it and go Sky HDi? Oh the dilemma

Telstraclear are becoming the new Vodafone. Constantly drip feeding information telling us how great its going to be and failing to deliver time and time again.

I dont want a PVR (I have an HTPC that can do all that and more) all I want is the HD picture. But do you think I can get a straight answer from Telstra on whether they will offer a solely HD STB ?
I recently 'upgraded' from analogue to digital but the picture quality is still poor and if they dont get a move on then Im going to have to seriously consider taking my phone, internet and tc elsewhere. Telstra may be far cheaper but Im fed up with being given the run around.

I want HD and I want it now.

I doubt TCL will release a non PVR HD unit. Why? Because it doesn't make sence. PVR style units are what people want and the uptake of MySky is proof of that. 99% of people want a simple way to record TV content and this gives them that.

Do you not already have HD content already on your PVR?

Nothing official but I have heard from reputable folks at TCL it will be a PVR. Not that it is possibly germane to this particular conversation but I have heard of situations where the PVR is a networked PVR - the content is actually stored on TCL servers. With the sort of handwidth a cable can deliver (especially when they go DOCSIS 3.0) that would make sense. Store all the content on their servers and just allows you view what you subscribed to via streaming.

the chances of PVR early in 2009 are unlikely ... I have heard on the grapevine that PVR project may well be on hold ... a big risk for TCL with MyFreeview emerging and MySky being more affordable. Would be interested in Jeff Doyle's official response to this ... but I would not be holding your breath for a TCL PVR in 2009.
