on2it: I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to the GSM monopoly being broken shortly as it's all good for customers!

I thought the Telecom announcement two days ago meant that GSM was not going to be launched now, but in fact 850MHz WCDMA instead.

The GSM monopoly will still exist, but its value will be diminished, as its getting on in terms of technology anyway.

Not quite - remember NZ Comms are building a brand new GSM network.

coffeebaron: Even remember the early days at a tech expo, where one of Vodafone' PR went head to head drag racing (mobile data) with Telecom. That's one race Telecom did win :)

In the Telecom camp I believe it was Jama (a user here) who was doing that...)

*cough* *cough* I think I still have the NZ Herald article at home somewhere.

Interesting thread this one and of course to throw in the proverbial spanner (stanner?) CDMA 1xRTT is actually considered a 3G network so the whole T3G advertising campaign was more than valid. BTW, just to add as well, the market feedback actually pointed to the T3G campaign as being one of the most successful run by Telecom.

Anyway, EVDO is old technology, it was launched October 2004. At the time the alternative was GPRS which I recall from Voda FUD was able download at the equivalent of 1mbps when used with the Optimizer. At least Telecom never tried to bend the laws of Physics...

I wouldn't tell that to too many people...

I've used both Telecom and Vodafone mobile data over the last few years throughout NZ.  Vodafone is OK if you stick to the main centres where they have 3G coverage, and HSPDA (3.5G) is QUICK.  But 3G is not that quick and can drop out a lot if you don't have good signal strength. Without 3G coverage (which is most of NZ), Vodafone is slower than dialup!

Fingers crossed that Telecom will give us a decent mobile data network and force Vodafone to do the same.

I was a geek before the word was invented!
