Rickles:

The ringer has no branding, just a small round (40mm diameter) unit with a BT plug on the back.

OP if its REN3+ as @sbiddle suggests you will need a ren booster like one of these

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/telephone-accessories/2079519/

In which case you will go

Ultrahub > REN Booster > Internal Wiring

EDIT: That product appears to be discontinued but there will be other similar products around

Can you post a picture here of the Ringer? we may be able to determine its brand and REN value for you

UPDATE:  Finally overcame short illness, and got up into attic.

Snipped the incoming wires, plugged router into wall socket, and now both ringer and extension phone work as before.

Also now rid of the silly 'dial twice' that was happening because the old external line is still working (apparently they leave it live for a month or so just in case emergency or security system links need time to switch over).
