I have recently had my landline switched to VOiP, and it is working perfectly fine.

Will my old hard-wire pole-to-house be disconnected, or just turned off at the 'exchange end'?  Although VOiP went live 36 hours ago, the old line is still live.

How is VoIP getting delivered over copper, Fibre or 4G?

You need get the wiring intergraded - if you are Wellington based I can help you do this - Bear in mind you will not be able to run as many phones off your RGW as you could off your traditional POTS line - you will have ringing issues

@nztim ... yes, I'd like to retain the couple of extensions I have.

I also appreciate that the 'old' line has both power and ringer attributes which should not be used in conjunction with VoIp/router.

Would simply 'cutting' the outside wire (easily got to in my attic 😁) then use an RJ11 double adapter out of the router (one wire to phone and other to wall socket) give me an internal phone set up?

This.

Rickles: ..just turned off at the 'exchange end'.

You (or the next occupant of your house) could change your mind in the future and there is no point constantly installing and removing copper.

Look on the back of your handsets, locate the Telepermit Sticker and add up the REN values of each handset you want to keep.

A phone line from a DMS100/NEAX supports a total REN value of 5, the Vodafone Ultraub would be 1 maybe 2 at the most - its safe to say if your total REN value doesn't exceed 2 you will be OK

Finally cut the street copper cable at the ETP and plug your ultra hub into your internal wiring - Job done

MAKE SURE YOU CUT THE COPPER STREET CABLE FIRST

@tripper1000 ... I really wonder if copper per se will be used again, but yes something in the future may utilise those lines.

I'd not so much remove the copper as simply disconnect it from the internal termination box, so could always be utilised again if need arose.

@nztim ... is that the RN= x numbers?   If so, two phones are 0.5 each. The other item I have on an extension is just a ringer so that we can hear when in kitchen or outside πŸ™ƒ

Thanks for your advice.

Don’t forget to include the RN of that ringer too

@nztim ... nothing on the ringer unit, so I guess simply suck-it-and-see?

@nztim ... can the old copper power feed actually damage the router?

I've read opinions saying yes and no, presumably country/system differences at play.

What type of ringer is it? Most I've come across have a REN of 3+ , they really do such the power.

The ringer has no branding, just a small round (40mm diameter) unit with a BT plug on the back.
