What about those who don't have any other connectivity options and cannot afford satellite services?

Good luck actually using modern day internet over a 56k connection

You could probably browse GZ with an ad blocker on and have a pretty okay experience ;).

Anything more than that yeah no.

56k is still faster than the minimum download speed for the EUBA/ADSL2+ network (32kbps)  😬

I know of a few petroleum companies using dial-up modems for m2m remote pump control/diagnostics, mainly at airports.

that wont be affected as they are dialing each other, not to an ISP

They will be affected when their local NEAX gets shut down

Are there really still 1000 people left on dialup?

Will be interesting to know, eg. one modem I know of is in Milford Sound - very remote, running off Baseband Copper from TNU I am pretty sure!

PGF fibre is coming to Milford, (may even be there by now)- so transitioning to a a more modern IP connection will soon be possible

Yep been heaps of roadworks on SH6 for the Hawea - Fox line. I’m not 100% on the progress of the whole thing.

I posted photos I took on here earlier last month in a thread about this taken on SH6 on the Lake Wanaka side. At that stage the machine heading south was maybe ~5km or so from joining up with the microduct that had been laid heading north from Lake Hawea.

New Fibre is been run to Milford sound bringing it into the digital age (mobile phone coverage and broadband)

Currently Milford Sound POTS is fed from a Hutt behind the Bus Park - That then goes via two PCM radio hops to the TNU2 NEAX

I understand this is still a small RSP in Te Anau offering Dialup to people in Milford Sound

I see TNU2 been one of the last NEAX's to be decommissioned after that Fibre Rollout is complete

That ought to bring the wifi pricing down. When I was last there, it was $30 for 50mb. Obviously was expensive satellite broadband. I do remember making work calls from the pay phones.
