Dochart: I wonder if selling cell tower assets will allow both Spark and Vodafone to offer more data on their plans. It would be nice if NZ mobile plans were similar to Aus.
It won't make any difference to data allocations.
What is quite interesting is that both Spark and Vodafone are doing this now... after 2 Degrees has spent considerable gold erecting (always wanted to use that in a post) their own sites.
I understand that they didn't want to make it easy for a 3rd competitor but also is a bit of a missed opportunity... although that being said, I understand 2 Degrees has current tower collocation arrangements (not to be confused with moran) with at least one of the other operators.

Another interesting observation I have made is the increasing number lately of locations where either Spark or Vodafone have decommissioned their own sites in favour of putting their gear on the other operator's tower. E.g. in the last two years alone Spark has co-located on Vodafone in Manukau SW, Plunket Ave and Lynfield. Vodafone has joined Spark at Northcote Exchange and Onepoto. 10+ years ago this would have been unheard of. A sign of the times perhaps.
2degrees co-locate with Spark, Vodafone and a number of other non-mobile wireless operators (e.g. ex-Woosh, Kordia/BCL, etc) at many locations around the country. Mostly Vodafone though especially in rural areas -- probably in part due to 2degrees wanting to keep a similar coverage footprint to the old Vodafone roaming arrangement.
If Infratil is involved we'll definitely need regulation. That company specialises in extracting high ROI from monopoly infrastructure and I personally consider them one of if not the most "Evil" NZ based corporations.
