Linux:

@b0jang You just might need to move the modem to a better location in the house or up a bit higher

I've tried it outdoors on the deck, still won't pick up 5G.

Spyware:

Shift house or have an external antenna installed. I've had better 4G signal with modem in a steel box. You obviously aren't within 500 metres of tower.

Yeah, the 4G signal isn't that great. But the 5G one is more than adequate and I don't see why the modem fails to connect to 5G, unless there's some minimum quality threshold to be even allowed to connect to the 5G tower.

If the 4G signal is not that great then 5G is going to be worse as it works on a higher frequency

Are they not separate towers?

Anyway, appreciate all the discussion around signal quality and the things I can do to improve it. VF have raised a case with some "technical experts" for me, just trying to get a resolution as fast as possible before the 30 days are up. We'll see how that goes.

Shout out to the VF network engineer that reached out and let me know about the towers in my area - I'm between a 4G and 5G tower so I guess it will pick whatever one looks good. New 5G tower that's planned for next year that should sort out that problem.

I hit up Spark and they told me they can't offer 4G broadband as there's too much contention for 4G already in my area, and 2degrees only offered a 300GB a month plan. I tried downgrading my plan at Vodafone to the 4G one to save some bucks but in order to do that they apparently needed a manager to approve refunds and told me to try another store. Bit of a joke.

I'll take the intermittent 5G as my fibre install is probably going to be a while anyway, and just eat the termination fee when it's up and running.

What did the network engineer say in reference to installing an external directional antenna??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.
