Also,

Why can't cable customers buy cheaper data top-ups like those available to PDQ customers? On the inhome $79.95 plan, extra data is charged at 2.95/gb only. The only other option is to upgrade $30 to the next plan. I guess for PDQ to be advertised as "affordable and simple", they have to make cable expensive and restrictive. Rolling over unused data would help though.

Here's the problem..

I challenge you to name another ISP that has the same quality of service as Telstra, eg: I can download at my max sync speed during peak time AND which is cheaper or the same price AND has more flexible data blocks/banking..

Xnet, Orcon, Vodafone, Slingshot fail on peak time performance
Telecom, Maxnet, Inspire, Actrix fail on flexible data blocks/banking
Snap fail on having a point of prescene in Auckland, I don't want my traffic travelling from Auckland to CHCH before getting to my ISP.

Screeb: I propose an idea that will make your customers happy, and won't hurt the wallet: Roll over data caps. That is, each month, any data left on the user's account will be transferred to the next month, and so forth. This should accumulate indefinately. So for instance, if someone is on a 40GB cap plan, and there is 1GB left at the end of the billing cycle, then the next month, the user has 41GB available. If they then only use 39GB again, the next month they will have 42GB available, etc, etc. Note that this doesn't just apply to purchased data packs (like some other ISPs have).

Comments?

Can I suggest for marketing also, a version of Big Back Yard that covers all of NZ?

You're kidding aren't you?
I haven't had my max speed for months and no amount of complaints have changed that fact. (10mbit)

hmm that is not good. I think a survey would find that the vast majority do get full speed download/upload on Telstra.

Mybe you just need to move to fix the problem Tongue out Seriously though what speeds do you get?

About a 5mbit connection speed. I'm used to it now...
Just wishing I hadn't signed up for TCL mobile so I could go elsewhere.

No way would I go back to telecom.. I prefer decent speeds. With TCL cable I 99% of the time get max up and down speeds.

i agree with this idea. i wish telecom xtra would do roll over data caps. i think slingshot does roll over data caps don't they?

Muwhahaha Xtra GO Large is mint, my speeds keep improving (highest dl speed was 1400 kbps) upload is kind of average (30kbps on torrents max but who cares about other people), and adsl 2+ all for $50 per month, with constant calls from xtra asking us if we want to switch over to newer and "better" plans. I average around 200 - 300gb per month (dont care about s92 tunneling ftw)
/brag over.
THis would seem like a very good idea because I mean after all you have paid to use that data havent you?

"Telecom, Maxnet, Inspire, Actrix fail on flexible data blocks/banking"

Uh, and so do TelstraClear, which is the exact reason I made this thread.

Somehow, Telecom Broadband is better than TelstraClear cable at the moment. Cable has some advantages over Telecom ASDL, yes, but Telecom's benefits outweigh cable's (Telecom > cable in speed, latency and price, with an equal cap).

I doubt if any TCL user can afford to download that much a monthWink

I agree Telecom has certainly improved it's reputation since Paul Reynolds took over as CEO and Telstra cable prices are out of whack now since Telecom dropped it's prices late last year but I was comparing Telstra PDQ ADSL.  I also still have concerns about Telecom's international latency and reliability for gaming.

I don't know about you guys but our usage varies a lot from month to month, anywhere from 18GB to 39GB currently. The Telstra PDQ data blocks aren't anywhere near as flexible as Slingshots or Xnet's options.  Everytime I consider changing to Slingshot, Xnet or Orcon a quick review of recent posts on Geekzone or Gameplanet reminds me it would be horrible for international latency and gaming.

So for varying usage I think Telstra PDQ is more flexible than Telecom's plans.  However, I do find it annoying that about 5 days before the end of my billing month I need to check make sure I'm going to stay under the next data block.  Lets hope the consider data banking.

Ours would, if the idea I proposed was implemented.

Well I've never used PDQ, but I have heard it's pretty good. I'm not sure what you're trying to say, really. It's all about trade off. You seem to find PDQ the best ADSL available, but not everyone uses the internet in the same way. Indeed, PDQ isn't the most popular.
