freitasm: As above, 4G footprint will be expanded to match 3G coverage.

Do you know how? Will they just bump the power up or something?

That's my understanding, yes.

...that's where Starlink comes in 😉

Probably betraying my lack of technology knowledge in this area, but if the OP had Starlink service and an account with a provide that supports WiFi calling, then the 3G shutdown probably is is not an issue anymore? Or does WiFi calling only work on outbound calls so inbound would not connect if there was no 3G servicerf?

Wi-Fi calling works both ways.

Wifi calling, if indeed the OP has it available, solves the problem when at home - but being rural, not a lot of time is spent there...

@lchiu7 WiFi calling works with zero mobile coverage and works as if the handset is connected to a cell site

if they are doing 500gb a month on their phone i would struggle to think they have a broadband connection at home.

If you can get 4g when on your roof why not get a RBI connection, with external antenna to give you a solid connection while at home.

The OP is using more than 500GB a month on his mobile, I doubt there's any other broadband.

4G will match 3g footprint in 99% of cases, where there is no coverage Wi-Fi calling is your solution (as it is now with friends in Makara)

The think you need to make sure of is that your phones are VoLTE & WiFi calling compliant.

Most of that is from game updates off my hotspot on my laptop when I go into town on 5g and I can easily pull over a gig down. I do have broadband but its pretty slow/unstable and I usually keep Wi-Fi calling switched off because it usually cuts out and the call disconnects and it wont handover to 3g when I go outside.

Where is this located? It sounds pretty rural.

This is because the call is moving from VoWifi (IMS) to circuit switched (SS7) this will be resolved with VoLTE and 4g/5g which will most likely happen at the same time or before you lose 3G

I would also invest in making your outdoor Wi-Fi signal stronger.

Something I've noticed in Nelson/Marlborough is deterioration of coverage with Vodafone in the last 18 months.  I drive SH6 a lot, so I know the areas where there is good coverage.  Bizarrely those have reduced significantly over the last 18\months.  Places that used to have three bars will have one, calls will drop out where they didn't used to etc etc.

I've noticed the same thing in some areas of the Marlborough Sounds.  Fishing spots where I used to have good coverage, I no longer do.

@MikeAqua coverage change like this is mainly caused by trees growing etc... Mother nature blocking the signal
