dawnraid:Oh and for anyone interested it looked like they pulled the entire 3g Network in the CBD down by 5PM-ish because scanning wouldnt pick it up only, 2g and NZ comms (which will be getting my business in the future).

This is quite logical. If the 3G network is busted but visible to handsets then pulling the plug is logical because it forces handsets back to GSM which had no problems (except for overloading).

johnr: Devices would of dropped back to 2G

John

The one I was troubleshooting was not, I was called in because a blackberry I had setup had stopped being able to email after two weeks of being setup.

The Blackberry web portal settings for this user had for some strange unrelated reason been wiped clean. I reset up the details but e-mail was still not working. This was around 1:30 - 2pm.

When I was talking to the helpdesk they told me there was a issue and to drop back to 2G manually (the phone was still locked on 3G and having 'packet' issues was the error on the blackberry.

Funny enough I was setting up a iPhone Activesync last week and it would work on wireless internally but not Vodafone, I was troubleshooting all sorts of firewall things and then tried 2G, called the helpdesk and heard of the big outage of 3G voice/data.

Perhaps I'm cursed, every time I'm setting up a phone the 3G is offline :-)

I only started noticing the outages after Vodafone announced they were going to race Telecom to 97% 3G coverage, and through things were breaking because of that, not because of vendor issues (seems to be going around the industry lately...wXc.)

Tyler - Parnell Geek - iPhone 3G - Lenovo X301 - Kaseya - Great Western Steak House, these are some of my favourite things.

As far as I can see, the issue is still occurring in Auckland CBD. No doubt 3G will start working again after about 7pm when all the workers go home.

Phones are not dropping back to 2G automatically either. I have to turn off 3G for my iphone to receive any calls which in the CBD during office hours. Others in my office with a range of different phones are all experiencing the same issues.

Yep, Im sitting on the top level of a building in central auckland, with line of sight to the majority of Auckland, and I cant pick up a single 3g nework, just 2g and NZ Comms, this is shocking service really. Also I have noticed the 2g network is slightly screwy at the moment as well. Well you cant really expect anything less in our 3rd world country.

Why do Vodaofne say the issue is resolved when it obviously isn't?

So the media don't get a whiff of it? The info has disappeared of 777.

I can confirm all 3G sites that were affected by the outage are back on air taking 3G traffic

I have done testing myself in around the area PS/CS

Vendor of the 3G network has done alot of work over night

Only reason why it was removed off 777 was cause the service was restored

comments like yours above are just plain stupid

Much like yourself. Seeing as the problems still exist, then I am totally justified in saying that, due to the limited information I have available at my disposal to draw a reasonable conclusion. Which by the addition of question mark points out my attempt at a educated guess.

Where are you located?

Have you tried a manual network selection to the 3G network?

simon14: Speaking of 3g beocming more and more available throughout the country, when Vodafone stated they were going to increase their 3g coverage to 97% of the country by May, i got so excited i skipped to the shops like a little school girl and bought me a shiny new 3g phone.... only to find out a week later on geekzone that it wouldn't work on the extended 3g network.

By the way, i've been working in Beach Haven, Northcote and Albany on the North Shore all day and had no issues with 3g coverage so it can't extend that far throughout the shore.

The buying of a shiney new 3G phone that actually doesn't support 900mhz UMTS is quite common.

Unfortunately the retail & dealer staff have little understanding about it, they often term 3G as all incompassing yet we all know there is many flavours (freq) of 3G WCDMA. Only those of us on Geekzone seem to have a clue about it.
