Linux:

handset into flight mode then enabled Wi-Fi

This.

If you're not looking to connect and use phone services and/or mobile data in another country, then this is the way.

✈️ flight mode on permanently the whole time from when you leave NZ, and only turned off when you return.

Once flight mode is enabled you can still enable wifi and bluetooth afterwards, connecting to wifi hotspots for data on your travels and connecting bluetooth headphones and smart watches etc as per normal.

At the same time though roaming charges seem A LOT better now than they previously were in most countries.
$8 per day in Rarotonga for example on 2 degrees was very fair.
Some places have data limits per day but others are fine and just match your account plan entitlements back in NZ.

I was on a Singapore Airlines flight that had in-flight roaming: https://www.aeromobile.net/inflight-roaming/

Which is a great way to punish people who forget to put their phone into flight mode! As soon as you leave NZ you could be up for international roaming charges, no need to wait until you get to your destination...

This will just be for if you need to make or receive a call or send TXTs.

Aeromobile does voice text & data.

@andyb ] The data however will not be roaming data as One NZ do not offer in flight data roaming. They only offer voice & TXT.
