anatoki: Pricing like what Snap, WxC, Slingshot etc do is not sustainable if you want to provide a good service to customers. Hell, even Orcon increased their overusage charges and aren't they the 4th (?) largest telco in NZ?

Telecom & TelstraClear have little to no issues in regards to bandwidth supply and they both charge higher than the competition which is saying something, isn't it? I'm pretty damn bias so you can take this with a grain of salt I guess, but you get what you pay for.

I'm guessing that you'll start seeing lower costs for bandwidth/overusage on the cable network once it has been upgraded to DOCSIS3 and can handle more traffic.

Yes I do realise that, but maybe TCL need to bring in better Bandwidth packs, or allow the larger packs to be used on slower plans.

I'd rather not more than double the latency of my DNS requests because of a select few sites not resolving. The point is it's TelstraClear's problem. I shouldn't have to do that or do what I currently do (modify my hosts file). Anyway, it's off topic.

Huh? The DNS servers I listed are TelstraClear serversl. ADSL customers are assigned these as primary & secondary DNS.

We've both established that there's issues with Paradise DNS however I've offered a solution which would fix the issues you're having, but that seems to not be good enough for you? Odd.

In regards to latency, it seems it takes Paradise DNS1 a little bit longer than one of the servers I recommended to return a response. See below:

That may be the case for you, but I'm in Wellington on cable, and get ~20ms average ping to ns1.acld.clix.net.nz, and ~10ms to ns1.paradise.net.nz. The Paradise servers are (or were) the default for Paradise cable customers.

+/- 10ms on dns lookups seems like hardly worth worrying about to me...

Yes, god forbid TelstraClear's DNS servers work correctly. I shouldn't have to switch them regardless of whether or not one's faster or slower. What about all the users who don't have the technical know-how to discover that the reason a website won't load is a problem with their ISP's DNS servers? Oh that's right, TelstraClear doesn't care about their customers, never mind.

Dude, if you had called the helpdesk they would have told you (and shown you, if you didn't know how) to switch to those servers. Nothing is perfect in this world but you're sure as hell not making it easier for yourself either. Can't help the unwilling I guess..

Taking a stab in the dark here but I bet you hadn't even bothered to advise TelstraClear of problems with DNS on Paradise.

Calling the helpdesk is the last thing I would do, especially given the ridiculous wait times, and the general unhelpfulness of the staff. I also know that TelstraClear is well aware of the DNS problems.

>Nothing is perfect in this world but you're sure as hell not making it easier for yourself either.

TelstraClear's reluctance to fix the issue isn't making it easier. And no, I'm not making anything harder for myself. As I said, I've already worked around the issue with my hosts file. The point is I shouldn't have to. This could be fixed in a minute by TelstraClear, but they refuse to do anything. Besides have their employees get snarky to customers on online forums I guess.

It's time we stop discussing this in this thread as it's being derailed enough. Sent you a PM, Screeb.

I'm normally very critical of companies when they are not providing good service (see some of my posts about other ISP's myself or family members have used).

.. but it seems like you are bagging their customer service / helpdesk without having even tried it??

Recently I rang the help desk during peak time last month about a billing problem.  The system told me I was 10th in the queue and if I didn't want to wait I could leave my number and they would call me back. So I left my cellphone number and they called me back within 20 minutes, I was away from my phone doing something and missed the 1st call but they called back a 2nd time a short while later and the billing problem was checked and resolved within about 5min.

Total of my time spent on the phone about 10min (5min to leave my number for a callback and 5min when they called me back and I answered).  The service experience was positive and I don't see how they could really improve on their current processes.

I know this Telstra >> Internode gaming servers routing problem is annoying for people trying to play on those popular servers but if it's the return path/route that is causing the problem then what can they do other than make requests to internode or whoever to resolve the problem.

We have called the helpdesk numerous times before. It takes about 40 minutes on average for us.

Re the routing issue, couldn't TelstraClear use a different provider when accessing IPs that return on the troubled route? Perhaps that's too difficult. Or a different provider altogether (ones that other NZ ISPs use that have no such issues). Though I admit I'm not an expert in this area, so I'm just guessing.
