Is there any word out there about TCL planning to change the charges for there bandwidth on the Cable plans?

There charges of $2.95 per Gb or $2.95 per 2Gb depending on plan, I think is far behind the times considering the average user now consumes amounts far beyond there pack and plans allowance.

I don't mind paying for speed, but cost of doing anything is starting to bite abit. I'm actually considering changinig back to DSL just for cheaper bandwidth.

Have you actually compared those rates with what's available from other ISP's?

You'll find they're pretty comparable or cheaper than most of the other ISP's out there. The likes of Ocron and Snap charge $2 per GB for data and Vodafone is around $2 or $1.50 for their higher plans.

Yes I have compared, was thinking of Snaps Pro plan which gives me 60Gb of bandwidth plus max connection( I know speed is slower than TCL) for $89.95, compared to the lightspeed 40G, which gives 40Gb of bandwidth for $109.00.

I dont care to much about speed, anything over 4mb down is enough, its the cost of bandwidth thats the problem. I've asked TCL about slowing the speed and increasing the bandwidth, But they wont do that, and wont give me a reason why, other than its not a plan.

But thats still over 30% more than the competitors you have quoted sbiddle.. Best value for money is to bite that bullet and upgrade your plan. Im sure you can find multiple items to consume the extra bandwidth ;) + over and above on the larder plans additional bandwidth is cheaper

TCL cable isn't the cheapest. There is no denying that..

The issue people really have to decide is whether being able to actually get 10Mbps out of your 10Mbps connection literally 24/7 is worthy of the extra costs or whether you're happy with an ADSL connection and the issues that may or may not occur.

The $2.95 for 2GB for overuse is comparative to the $1.50 or $2 you'll pay on snap depending on your plan.

I think the problem would be solved if TCL were alittle more flexible with there bandwidth packs and there plans. I wouldn't mind the charges if I could slow the plan from 10Mb to 4Mb and place a 40Gb pack on it, but they wont do that.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy the reliability of the connection, but alittle better bandwidth options would make it alittle easier to use.

Remember the snap plan isn't a Naked ADSL plan though whereas the $109 from TCL is a naked plan available without a phoneline.

If you're comparing apples with apples you need to look at the Snap Naked plans which offer 20GB for $89.95 which is $10 more than TCL for the same cap and overuse is $2 per GB vs $2.95 for 2GB on TCL.

Actually I was comparing the broadband side only,

Both the Snap Pro and the TCL Lightspeed 40G were quoted without the phoneline, which with both TCL and Snap is approx $37

What Sbiddle is saying is you NEED a phoneline to use the Snap Pro which i no problem if you already have a phone line. If you dont then this is an extra cost that must be included when comparing the plans..

I already have a phone line, currently with TCL, the phone line isn't an issue.

If I switched systems to Snap, I would cancel everything with TCL, get the Telecom installed line rehooked up to the house, and go with Phone and Broadband with Snap.

Because the Phone Line is the same price, give or take 5cents with TCL and Snap, I was just quoting the Internet connection and the difference between TCL cable internet and Snap ADSL. As for Naked DSL, the Wife would shoot me if I didn't get a phone line with any package hehe. Not interested in VoIP/naked DSL at present.

But I think its possibly just worth lumping it and staying with TCL and see if they bother to alter there plans.

Appreciate that Snap speeds will differ across the country, but I was on a Snap ADSL connection in Sandringham, Auckland, and it was far slower than the previous TelstraClear PDQ (ADSL) connection we had... I was lucky if it ever went as fast as 2MB down so I wouldn't be in a hurry to change back anytime soon...

Pricing like what Snap, WxC, Slingshot etc do is not sustainable if you want to provide a good service to customers. Hell, even Orcon increased their overusage charges and aren't they the 4th (?) largest telco in NZ?

Telecom & TelstraClear have little to no issues in regards to bandwidth supply and they both charge higher than the competition which is saying something, isn't it? I'm pretty damn bias so you can take this with a grain of salt I guess, but you get what you pay for.

I'm guessing that you'll start seeing lower costs for bandwidth/overusage on the cable network once it has been upgraded to DOCSIS3 and can handle more traffic.

Then why didn't costs come down when the network was last upgraded to increase throughput? Especially since in Wellington the 25Mbit plans never arrived...

BTW you also didn't respond to my nslookups in the other thread which show the Paradise DNS not resolving escapistmagazine.com for me...

Did you miss the part where I said "I'm guessing"?

If the Paradise DNS servers aren't working correctly for lookups, change to some other TCL servers that are:

tristan:~ tristan$ host ns1.acld.clix.net.nz
ns1.acld.clix.net.nz has address 203.97.78.43
tristan:~ tristan$ host ns2.acld.clix.net.nz
ns2.acld.clix.net.nz has address 203.97.78.44

Is it just me and OSX or does this forum software really suck?

I'd rather not more than double the latency of my DNS requests because of a select few sites not resolving. The point is it's TelstraClear's problem. I shouldn't have to do that or do what I currently do (modify my hosts file). Anyway, it's off topic.

>>Did you miss the part where I said "I'm guessing"?

No, I'm simply pointing out that it means very little. "I'm guessing" implies you think it probably will (more likely than not), so I noted that it hasn't happened in the past, and thus does not seem likely to happen, from a customer's perspective.

Yes, the forum software does suck, regardless of OS.
