This was talked about here previously, and it may/may not be a different issue but we had the problem when putting a XT SIM in a Vodafone iPhone, when we put the VF SIM back in it still said Telecom NZ.

and... It was ROAMING on Telecom NZ's network, incurring roaming charges from what others here said.

The fix is to put the XT SIM back in, then choose Vodafone NZ in the network selection, THEN put the VF SIM back in.

The reason you cannot choose the carrier manually with the VF SIM in is because (as it was explained to me) the VF SIM disables this menu - the menu still _appears_ it just doesn't do anything when you choose a carrier.

Just tried that..no success and I rebooted it too. Will just have to wait till another fix!

Strangeness. I'd confirm your not roaming and incurring charges...

I tried to find the original post here on geekzone but I can't for the life of me find it, we discussed the exact same issue

exportgold how did you know it was roaming? From what johnr suggested the phone is still on VF while "displaying TelecomNZ".

I don't *know* it's roaming... I'm just paranoid about huge roaming bills, and the other thread I can't find mentioned that as a issue.

I could be completely wrong. JohnR is far more knowledable than I on Vodafone issues.

That was my first reaction and I'm like you - paranoid about roaming charges.

But then - do Vodafone and Telecom have roaming agreements to each other's networks in the first place?

Is there a way to tell for sure? I personally have a way - find a Vodafone 3G dead spot, use Vodafone SIM that says "Telecom NZ", run a speed test. If it is faster than GPRS then I've roamed onto Telecom. Expensive just to find out though! lol

Just tried again with a 2degrees sim and a Vodafone sim, it worked! really quite strange..

I have a way around this. It happened to me too with my iPhone. It showed the telecom label, appeared to be connected to the Telecom network but worked as though it was on the Vodafone one when the Vodafone SIM was installed.
To fix it:
Have the Vodafone SIM installed.

Turn off your phone
Reinsert the Telecom sim.
Turn the phone on, and wait till it connects to the network. It will take quite a while to restart. It will of course show the Telecom label.
Turn the phone off and wait a few minutes.
Replace the SIM with the Vodafone one
Turn it back on
It will take an age to restart and should now show the Vodafone label.

You may have to repeat this.

The secret to fixing it, and the cause of the problem is that the SIM does not like being removed while the phone is turned on. Good luck

Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ do not have a roaming agreement between each other so it would be impossible....

I Had this issue in november last year when I got my XT sim, the problem only occored if I did a sim swapwithout shutting down the phone first. So I suspec at some point you may have swapped SIMs when the phone was still on?

I get this problem too, I soon realised it was just a glitch. It doesn't have any effect on the use of the phone either, you're not "roaming" or getting charged any differently.

For now just ignore it, it will be fixed soon enough.

You don't need to reset your phone to swap sims either, it works 100% of the time with the phone on for me. The only thing you may need to change is the APN, but usually writing in www.vodafone.net.nz or internet.telecom.co.nz is a bunch faster than resetting your mobile.

This is true, it can be done, but shouldnt, hence the issue with the provider displaying incorrectly. Also as you mention because the device didn't boot with the sim, details such as APN & MMS settings etc are not updated.

It's like saying, you can unplug a CDROM or secondary drive (I'm not talking USB) from a PC while the PC is running, but it's best not to

With the new carrier updates from Vodafone and the XT ipcc both providers work straight away without resetting the phone. Including MMS and Data

The Carrier is a bug, it's not the users fault.
