I'm doing some tests at the moment of the iPhone on XT and Vodafone.
I just put a Vodafone SIM card into my iPhone and the "Operator logo" says "Telecom NZ".
Huh?
I turn off the phone and turn it back on to see if it was some sort of error.
Still Telecom NZ!
So I check my Carrier settings, and it is on Automatic. I set this to vodafone NZ (the other option is Telecom NZ), and it STILL says Telecom NZ.
I dial an 0800 number - it connects.
What's going on??
I have another SIM that I use with this iPhone and the behaviour is definitely not this!!!

Vodafone have advised this issue to Apple

Only worry about the SIM card that is in the handset

If it makes any difference/helps find a fix, I am in Dunedin.

Sorry, I meant just to say I was in Dunedin in case it helped anyone that was actually working on the issue. I know many already know my location.

I wonder if that fix will prevent other SIMs working in the iPhone?

But that would be a SIM lock how did you come to this?

No way, Apple sells iPhones on their website and says

'iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier'

So they can't start locking iphones to any one carrier

Talk about one thing then SIM locking comes up as stated before vodafone NZ do not SIM lock devices

I was simply wondering...Apple do some strange things sometimes.

I have the exact same issue, found it so weird. Posted it to Twitter as well. My phone is jailbroken so I don't have to see that carrier name though!

I had the issue too, but it seem to fix itself after updating the IPCC file a couple of times, and swapping SIM cards. Can't remember the exact sequence I followed though. Pretty random.
