Could be unrelated but we are getting really mixed performance in Chch today, with parts of sites not loading or going slow e.g. geekzone first few tries got navigation & ads but not the forum itself! Youtube some of the thumbnails take 10s of secs to load etc. Seems to be mainly overseas sites that are problematic with most local stuff really snappy.
Agreed - here in Christchurch some sites are working fine, but others are incredibly slow and don't even load stylesheets...
Speedtest results: to Auckland: 8.47 Mb/s, 49 ms ping to Sydney: 1.90 Mb/s, 76 ms ping to San Francisco: 0.48 Mb/s, 186 ms ping to London: 0.38 Mb/s, 627 ms ping!
Sydney speedtest wasn't working at all for me when I posted earlier, but ok now...
Auckland: 8.28Mb/s, 50ms Sydney 7.54Mb/s, 61ms San Francisco 2.34Mb/s, 182ms London 0.82Mb/s, 617ms
I don't think the high latency to London is too abnormal. Speed to the US is pretty slow, I had 8Mb/s 2 days ago. My gripe isn't the lack of raw speed though, it's the flakiness and inconsistency -especially when some sites time out, others half load, with parts timing out (wtf!) and others still are fine. Ironically, facebook is the fastest I've seen in ages (ignoring the many bugs)
Everything *seems* to be back up for me now (sites such as tinyurl.com and maxdps.com were down for me earlier today). I've been gaming all afternoon and haven't had any latency issues, but couldn't get to those two sites before.
I haven't had any noticeable speed issues this afternoon and I've so far downloaded about 7GB. I'm guessing it's obviously something that has affected some users rather than all.
well, gmail was the way i knew you'd posted a new msg - so ok for me :) (checked a few international sites which seem ok aswell) - but your right - google.com not replying
Yep, I can confirm (from my testing), Telstra Clear is having (RIGHT NOW) some insanely big problems with their DNS servers.
nameserver 203.97.78.44 nameserver 203.96.37.1
are both broken. They won't properly resolve addresses outside of NZ. So, for example, they are able to load the geekzone page, but when you click through to the forums list, you get the main page, but not the actual list of forums.
All international sites were down this morning. Seems I was the first to log the fault at 8:30 from Karori. Gmail is now accessible but many sites are not. And the ad server here seems to be an overseas site as it is blocking the display of pages until they time out.
We rang TCL and they said they are experiencing routing issues with one of the Major US ISPs (backbone network im sure). So this is where the problems are coming from. As this is usually the international route to all other countries for us (I am guessing).
Also annoyed that they do not provide any reasonable info on their website about this issue. Just bad PR IMO
