geekiegeek: If they dropped the need to have a phone I would probably go for this. I currently use MyskyHDi and Telstra cable internet which means no phone line - it so nice to never have a random call at dinner time from someone trying to sell you something - but pretty sure they only do TV with a phone line.

You can get TV+cable internet. The requirement for a phoneline went a long time ago. It's just that the bundling prices only allow you to view pricing if you want a phoneline!

Much like cable internet with no phone line it's not something TCL actively promote.

Quite inconsistent there, as few friends wanting to get cable internet been told by the CRS that they NEED phoneline - however, the CSR did not bring up the option that you don't need phoneline if you go for 10GB+ plans, or TV service without phoneline from 10GB+ plans.

I've signed up for testing, so we'll see how it goes, I guess.

I find the mention of mpeg4. mpeg2, h264, and the other video formats interesting.  I wonder if there is a USB port?  Playback transfer of video files back and forth from other sources?  Could make my windows media center jealous.  Or obsolete.

Hmmmmmmm....

mmmm well if I can get it with just cable and no phone it may be a good option. Cuts down on the amount of companies I have to deal with and my early impression of whats on the website is that this offering may be better then sky's - will have to go check it out instore come december.

Looking at the picture of the box on the website it looks like a USB port at the bottom right hand corner of the unit next to the envelope symbol. Awesome if it is!

The TCL website specifically says that you cannot order Digital TV without a phone line. Try selecting just Digital TV on the online ordering page here: https://www.telstraclear.co.nz/newcustomer-orderform/serviceSelection.jsf

I wouldn't get too excited. I'd expect the device to be locked down similair to what MySky is.

You can get Telstra DTV if you have 10GB HSI or above. No discount will apply however so you'll need to add $47.20 (+ whatever TV tier you choose) to the price of the HSI plan you have. 0508 537 837.

Pricing has been announced (via snailmail):

$99 installation, then $15 per month...

There will only be 10 testers.

Interestingly, the letter says this is "the very first product in the HomeMedia suite".

sbiddle:
That's not entirely the case. 3 tuners is a great number to have. The box certainly is network capable (and has a built in modem) so streaming and downloadable content could certainly play a part in the future.

Hi sbiddle, where abouts did you find out it has a built modem?

It's quite logical isn't it? You wouldn't want to deploy yet another device that requires an external modem to access content and the EPG.

I'm sure you know a but more about the box than me anyway! :-)

So pricing is $47 per month for the digital TV if you have no phone line? Plus sky sports packages etc etc

The only update I can give is that I asked Telstra Clear (via Twitter) what channels they will be offering in HD, and their response was: "Close to what Sky does"

Sky charges extra for HD channels so it will be interesting to see if TCL will charge extra for the HD content too? I'm guessing they will.

I hope TelstraClear will offer the option of not having Sky Channels.
How much would the monthly subscription for the TV service be without Sky? $10?
