The difference between communism and capitalism.

communism = work for and rewarded by the state and in theory no one is financially richer than their neighbour

capitalism = make as much money as possible otherwise your share holders will punish you

NZ - Telecom or Vodafone = capitalism

In relevance to this thread internet access should not be restricted nor should it be censored.

Censorship is a foundation of communism. Restrict what your population can do and what they know and they will toe the line. Therefore they will be less likely to revolt.

timbo: So a WiMax operator needs to be able to build a business case based on just being a 'pipe' - and forget about offering any services, even e-mail or web-hosting, use partners for that.

Sorry to quote myself - but saw interesting story regarding the amount that Telco's are spending on billing and CRM systems. A simple 'data pipe' only operator would not need to worry about this, nor interconnection etc. Their whole cost structure would be so much lower.

I would not call it censorship, but rights restriction. But being a private institution Vodafone is allowed to decide what constitutes the rights and is simply exercising its power.

There are plenty of private institutions that dont have blanket rights to make any decision they want. (Check with the Commerce Comission for more details).

OK - The foundation of the Internet is freedom of expression and communication. What Voda are doing is against the foundation and principals of the Internet.

Therefore I want to suggest that a 'restricted' internet service should use a different name to identify that it is restricted. Some suggestions:

CommiNet
RestrictoNet
CrippleNet
DogNet

...Any others?

There's a name for this in respect to operators: "walled garden".

Has anyone checked to see if they are in fact blocking skype?

Does anyone happen to know how skype works? For instance is there a single Ip that the users client has to contact to make it work? Or would they just have to block a protocol?

Evil thought for the day..... think proxy, tunnel, encryption.

Bottom line...I don't think they can prevent the customer doing anything that the customer is prepared to pay for.....

The conversation has predominantly centered on Skype, but the wording is as follows:

"The use of Vodafone Mobile Connect for Voice over IP (VoIP) is excluded."

Which of course encompasses so many services including Skype, MSN, ICQ, Netmeeting etc etc (the list is as long as my arm).

Surely they are not actively blocking all of these services?

Have a try going to Jumbuck chat...http://telstra.jumbuck.com/
when I enter this address it loads the disclaimer page but when entering the chat room it automatically defaults to Vodafone live...
possibly Vodafone blocking access to a Chat service that competes with their high priced offering??

i'm not sure that you can get to the Internet from the WAP APN's. Try using www.vodafone.net.nz...I just went to jumbuck from there via UMTS and got sent a wml file, which of course mozilla did not understand. But if you do it from an actual phone, I think it should work.

Why is Vodafone Video Calling not classed as VoIP anyway? It uses the SIP protocol so you could argue that the only difference between a SIP VoIP audio call and a SIP Network based Video Calling call is the extra video? I am assuming Vodafone will also not be introducing any software on their network to allow video conferencing between laptops/PDA'a and 3G phones using video calling. :-)

Up until very recently Vodafone's T&C's prohibited streaming video, at least they have updated it before launching 3G!

AFAIK video calls on UMTS do not use IP for transport, only for initiation and control.
