Its more that Vodafone want people to have the "Vodafone Experience" when buying the products in stores.. thats also a reason why the dealerships that can sell them are limited (ie; not Farmers or Newbolds etc.) It means that the staff selling the product can actualy show the customer how it work and what it can and CAN'T do...

Interesting, can you tell me more about where you heard this from?

I know what the restrictions are (For a SE Z800/Z1010) and they're based in firmware (different firmware images identify themselves differently) - Nothing to do with settings in the phone. As well as firmware image there's also (I believe) a NZ specific customisation file - This would also need to be flashed to the phone.

I've had a lot of people ask me if they can get their Z800i set to access the VF Live! 3G content, sadly the answer at the moment is no. I'm working on it though, any info from Voda would be useful (though I think they'll just laugh and I don't blame them, I would laugh in their situation)

The fee is charged for someone to spend time in store to setup your imported handset and this is charged by first mobile digital mobile and thats a fare charge. If vodafone sell a handset its setup to go out of the box the importer should set these up I would go back to place of purchase. What happens if you take a imported handset to Telecom!! How much is a telecom telepermit

So it's just a fee to put in the WAP and APN settings - Not to make the phone "work" with the 3G Portal?

No way its just a fee for someone to sit down and load the APNs (data aaccounts) in there imported handset or set up there device to talk to a laptop or anything along those lines,

PARADOXSM has blown this out of the water, I am sure when I get my car serviced I pay labour on time at about min $50 an hour.

I think the fee is more than justified. Vodafone is a business not a charity.

Unfortunately in this industry people expect too much service for free, when they would easily expect to pay for the same service if it was for their PC or car...

the thing is you can do alot of it for free, unsupported handsets will require manual programming but the wireless portal has a good range.

the fee is fine, the reality is vf is hitting back at parallel importers, their services are designed in a way to encourage the behaviour of the consumer. the behaviour they are encouraging is to buy through a vodafone retailer and have the support rather than making savings by parallel importing and facing uncertainty or lockout by not being compatible with the portal.

I wish the threshold was adjustable for the kickback to gsm/gprs
around home I never lose 3g reception as far as i know it is just erratic meaning that it kicks back to gprs with a huge lag and then changes its mind and goes back to umts with another huge lag hurting my speeds bigtime, a faster fallback/stepup and it wouldnt be noticable but what happens is the service completely stops for 3-10 seconds at a time.

That all said, its working well for me so far, I am in an office in town and completely wireless (well except for laptop power and cellphone charger) but its a nice feeling.

I stopped my handset jumping back to GPRS by lifting it up about 20cm and it has not jumped back since

Edited my post, oops, I thought (actually was told) that Vodafone now charge $50 need to activate a handset on the network and charge accordingly. This is incorrect and I (we) will never go back to that dealer.

This was actually the charge by the store to set the data accounts in the handset which is fine. It's a horrid job. but he could have been honest rather than saying it's a Vodafone levy.
