Well around 3pm yesterday, a guy from Chorus rang, and advised that he's on his way over.
I met him at home, and an hour later the problem was resolved.  Turns out the cable under the house had somehow become severed.  He replaced the cable, and went on his merry way.  He also found that the sky technician (from a prior tenant installation), had screwed up the pairs in the BT-Jack, and had two pairs into a single crimp.   "Bloody idiots" I believe was the term used here.

So bottom line is, I'm sticking with Xnet, hurrah! I really didn't want to have to jump ship for a quick alternative installation.

I know this post wont help you, nor make you feel better but are you shure you want to risk your job on a best effort DSL service? I don't know what other connectivity options you have where you live but I'd suggest looking into some diversity.

I've spoken to Bosses of people who work remotely over DSL and they typically dont have any patience or understanding when things go wrong. Perhaps a clothed DSL option would suit you better?

Strangely enough, the reason why I chose a Naked DSL solution, is because I somehow find it more reliable.  I'm not too sure if there's any technical whitepaper to back that up, but I'm basing this from my own obervations.  A big attraction of VFX is of course the savings by not having a physical home-line.

But yes, I completely agree with having some kind of backup contingency, with atleast having one means of communication when problems arise.  The problem with that, is the increase expense should really be passed onto the employer, and I know for certain that they won't wear that at all.  Such is life.

You must be super unlucky to not have mobile coverage. Telecom's does look a bit patchy but Vodafone's looks fairly good for Bluff Hill Napier.

Super unlucky, yes.  On those coverage maps, we are right where it fades.  My partner and I are both on Vodafone, she can get patchy reception on her Sony-Ericsson v640i, but I get absolutely nothing on my Odyssey - hence the diversion to home line.

Apparantly people living right next door to us have no problems with their Telecom mobiles.  Except I'm not prepared to switch to Telecom, seeing as we've (the business) just signed up with Telstra on their Landlines, Data, and Mobile solutions (using Vodafones network), and as such would void the purpose of group-calling.

You could get a Telecom XT network based prepay phone (only for the purpose of the phone redirection) as they use the 850mhz frequency which should travel far better than the Vodafone 2100mhz.

I've got VFX and I believe there are some options there that allow you to setup call forwarding for certain times of the day only (although you may need to purchase the advanced pack for that option).

Way to go Xnet!
Yet again your international carrier Vocus fails to deliver, causing further international connectivity issues tonight.

I haven't been on your service for long, but a jump to Telstra is certainly looking like a healthy option.

I ring your call centre at 7.45pm, in queue until 8pm, where I suddenly get a "we're closed" IVR.
Are you even aware of the international issues happening as I compose this?

yep international sites are timing out.
xnet site does not report any problems at present

Yup, international is hosed again.
But again, NZ based (ACS, which are off WIX) ipv6 tunnel to the rescue.

Oh, for it to be useful, you need a box somewhere else (Mine's a linode in the US) that also has a V6 address so I just ssh into it and run all my traffic over a proxy running on it. You can also access anything that has a v6 IP..

http://www.sixxs.net/ is a tunnel broker and you can get a tunnel to ACS in wellington..
You can also use teredo (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teredo_tunneling ) That tends to be pretty laggy though.

There's also http://tunnelbroker.net/ or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IPv6_tunnel_brokers :)

You need an OS that's capable of doing ipv6 (win7/vista have it on by default, you need to enable it in XP)

But not many sites are ipv6 enabled yet, sadly. There's ipv6.google.com atm.
