$5 says it the RTA 1320, they have a reputation for crapping out after a year or so (usually in the summer heat) and acting "flakey"

Beg, borrow or steal a different modem/router to test - would be the obvious choice for confirming your RTA 1320 as the problem.

Yeah I am starting to think you are probably right. I have just ordered a new Draytek Vigor 120 as I figured if it ain't the 1320 it will probably die soon anyway and I would like a decent modem in place going forward (I work from home and need something reliable). I will keep the old 1320 as a backup.

If I still have issues with the new Draytek I will be contacting WxC and taking it up with them.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and help with this.

SumnerBoy: Sumner, Christchurch.

OK, not anywhere I live.

Anyway, you cant go wrong with a full splitter install + Draytek 120 (or better Draytek 2700e).

What exactly does a "full splitter install" mean?

Bah to the 2700e. It ain't a patch (so to speak) on a dd-wrt'd router.

I am currently running a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware. Been very happy with it so far, just need to get the ADSL modem side of things sorted out - which the Vigor 120 should hopefully do.

In PPPoA to PPPoE bridge mode we are talking about here :)
The 2700e is an extremly good router for long rural lines.

Chorus tech comes out, installs a Master filter, which is much higher grade than those cheap plug in filters (which arn't the best if you want best perfomance from ADSL2+). You then get a dedicated ADSL jack-point and no more filters needed for the phones.

I see - I am about to build a new house and have been thinking about how to design my phone/data network. I intend to have a server cupboard where the phone line is terminated and from there have a patch panel for sending phone/data throughout the house. So I am guessing I should be looking to get one of these dedicated ADSL jacks for this location?

Thanks for the tip.

A central splitter is installed where the phone line comes into the house in order to isolate the jack used for DSL from the rest of the jack points used for land line/fax/alarm/sky ppv etc. This means you don't need to use the individual plugin adsl filters for all the aforementioned devices.

Basically it's the best way to ensure practically no noise or interference from the above mentioned devices can mess with your DSL signal.

Cost is about ~$40-50 for the splitter part, plus x for labour/materials to install it.

sultanoswing: Good call on the draytek. It's a nice bit o' kit.

As an FYI, when you enter your PPPoE details into the router, DON'T enter a service name, or it won't work (took two days of frustration before I found this out). After that - flawless victory.

Well just took delivery of my shiny new Draytek. Got it all setup and working but it is disconnecting even more frequently than the 1320 did - and it is doing it during the day, every 5-10 mins.

I configured it by disabling the PPPoE/PPPoA Client and ticking the PPPoE Pass-through option. Left pretty much everything else as the default. I have noticed that after rebooting the PPPoE/PPPoA Client has been re-enabled - but everything seems to be working ok - is this an issue?

I entered my ISP details in the WRT54GL and configured it to connect using PPPoE and everything is sweet. Just wanted to make sure this setup is correct? Can I disable the DHCP server on the Draytek?

I am going to call WxC and see if I can get my line tested - cos the continual dropouts are starting to really bug me!

The Drayteks do have a range of firmware flavours to play around with; however, out of the box, you should not be getting continual dropouts - so very much suspect an issue with your line.

Oh, check the power pack is the 1W pack - some earlier models had a 500mA.

When in PPPoE pass-through is enabled, you don't need to disable DHCP.

I checked the power pack and it is 9V 1A.

Have tried ringing WxC but got the "our tech lines are very busy" message. Will keep trying.

Turns out it was a line fault. They have done a 24hr analysis and I have been waiting to find out the results. Although as of this morning they seem to have changed something and I have a much more reliable connection. Seems I didn't need to invest in the new Draytek but I guess it can't hurt - and at least now I have a backup!

Thanks to all for your help.
