johnr: The issue was not a fault on the Vodafone NZ network as such but a transmission / capacity fiber provider for Vodafone NZ

John

It was actually a Vodafone problem. After blaming FX Networks it seems it was all Vodafone's fault after all.

It's still not double standards though!

People who compare it to the media coverage XT got and say it should get the same, are obviously not thinking clearly...

No, it's not. The comments about still being a Vodafone problem is because the Vodafone communications team initially dismissed it blaming FX networks, only to a few hours later admit it was a Vodafone fault, not caused by the other company.

Still overreaction from the media.

I'm in two minds on this one.

On one hand I agree with people in this thread that I don't think it should get the same coverage as the latest XT outages, given this in only one (not their first though), and the XT last one was, what, the fourth in a short time span?

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure even the first XT outage got more coverage than this - clamouring for compensation for customers, large 'your views' section in the herald,  major TV news item etc.
After the first large XT outage, which IIRC was a similar scale to this Voda one (correct me if I'm wrong, I remember the first outage being only a few hours, like this one),  Telecom announced compensation of something like $5m.

Will Voda announce similar compensation for it's affected customers? Not yet,  but it will take a few days for them to come up with a reasonable compensation plan.

Secondly the fact that Voda have been attacking XT for it's outages (calling themselves the 'reliable network' etc)  makes me think it should get a little more coverage that it otherwise might, just for the double standards aspect, as well as for the denial of blame, then subsequent reversal.

You are not even close XT first outage was Taupo South not 16 sites and compensation has already been spoken about in the first news artice

JohnR is correct, the first XT outage was huge compared to this so that point is not valid. As for "the denial of blame, then subsequent reversal" don't blame the entire company. You know what I mean.

Telecom's outage was approx 500 sites and lasted over 24 hours affecting 240,000 people and was their 3rd complete outage from Taupo south in the last two months.

Vodafone's outage was 16(?) sites lasting what 16 hours? and probably affected a few thousand people and was their first public outage since last year when Newmarket 3G went down. (I'll probably be smacked by JohnR because it was not 'newmarket' but I don't know the exact zone that RNC covers. :)

By no means was the Vodafone outage of the scale and shear glory of the XT crashes. In fact the guy from TUANZ cannot find a similar outage anywhere in the world which such a large section of a mobile network went down covering such a large region for such a long time and for so long.

XT stands apart in this regards.

fair point  I was thinking of the 'scale' in terms of hours of downtime,  rather than number of people affected.

Could you point out where compensation was adressed please?  I'm struggling to find anything at the Herald website.  The only stories are here
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10630735
or
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10630606
where the quote from Voda is:

Mr Brislen dismissed complaints as "hair trigger reactions".

"The moment they can't make a call on the first attempt or don't receive a text in three seconds, they jump to the conclusion there must be a problem with the network."

or here:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10630410

How much has been announced? Is it similar to XT where, after the first outage they gave affected customers (IIRC) 1 month plan charges credit and free calling the foillowing weekend?

Obvously,  number of customer affected is smaller, so total compensation would be smaller,  but impact to those customers individually is pretty similar i.e. outage for quite a few hours,  just like the first XT outage, so the compensation per customer I imagine will be quite similart to the first XT outage.

since you are quoting me, you will note I was quite careful to refer only to the first XT outage for comparison purposes, so as to exclude the 'multiplier; effect of having several outages over short time.

Obviously in terms of number of people affected I was out,  but the point aobut it being the third outage is not relevant to that point. The first XT outage, I'm pretty sure, was only a few hours,  even if it did affect a lot more people.

6 Hours not 16 and Vodafone customers were handed to the GSM network during that RNC outage so customer impact was small

Herald claims it was much longer than 16 hours:

"A fault was triggered during an upgrade to cables between Taupiri and Horotiu in the Waikato on Saturday morning, about 8.30am.

The fault affected 16 cell sites in the Bay of Plenty, with some having 2G and 3G capability disrupted intermittently.

Customers suffered "degraded performances" and some calls and text messages were not connected immediately.

The sites were all back up and running by 2.40pm on Saturday."

8.30am saturday to 2.40pm sunday apparently - over 24 hours.

(although,  NZHerald is not the most reliable distributer of facts so I take what they say with a pinch of salt)

I was going by the NZ Herald information that NonprayingMantis has now quoted... Unless you mean the 'Newmarket' outage, and if you are talking about that I was only getting about 20% of my calls through because 2G overloaded... And no data from memory.

But you can't beat XT for outages if we are going for glory :)
