Mobile troubles hit Vodafone

Vodafone says it is continuing to receive a lot of "hair trigger reactions" and complaints from customers.

Vodafone customers found themselves in a similar situation to users of Telecom's XT network when maintenance work prevented some calls and text messages being connected.

Spokesman Paul Brislen said a fault affected 12 out of its 100 cell sites, and customers mainly in the Bay of Plenty region suffered "degraded performances".

The problems began overnight on Friday and the network was fully operational from 3pm on Saturday. Customer Christine Symes says up to 80 per cent of her calls are often dropped midway through a conversation.

Mr Brislen dismissed complaints as "hair trigger reactions".

"The moment they can't make a call on the first attempt or don't receive a text in three seconds, they jump to the conclusion there must be a problem with the network."

The issue was not a fault on the Vodafone NZ network as such but a transmission / capacity fiber provider for Vodafone NZ

It's the age old double standard really... I agree if it was Telecom this would have been a big story.

If Vodafone NZ had the same issues in the last few months as XT then yes it would be head line news you are not comparing apples with apples folks the Outage was not all of Taupo South

No double standard really, if they have an outage tomorrow, then next Monday, and then 3 days in April, you may start to see some headlines..

How is it a double standard??

I know of areas like Albany to Orewa that went offline ages ago and nothing was in the Media but since XT issues the media and public are going nuts the slightest outage and the whole of the Vodafone network is down

There is a big difference between complete and uncontrolled network failure (well complete for half the country) and a small region suffering degraded service during an expected and planned maintenance/upgrade.

Of course you dont think Telecom does not have similar maintenance/upgrade procedures that see some change in network performance (XT or CDMA), happens all the time, nothing new.

No its not a double standard.

Most of XTs outages have been way more serious and widespread than this one.

I can't stand VF but you have to be fair about these kind of things.

Well it seemed very odd to me that the media wasnt all over it.
They seem to have nothing else to report on.
If anyone sneezes at Telecom at the moment they are on it like a ton of bricks.
I'm not making light of the XT outages and I know that things do go out of action from time to time - but still - I was surprised it barely got mentioned.

If a similar thing had happened to the CDMA network it would have been news!

No double standard.  The only reason XT would have made the headlines is because of all the previous outages.   It makes it a hot topic.  If VDFN had that many large outages, it would be a hot topic and would have made the headlines.

XT problems are a hyped by the media and will continue to be for the next few months.

It may come as a surprise to many people but cellsite outages happen on a continual basis from all networks.

In recent week there have been XT outages that haven't made the news, there have been VF outages that haven't made the news and probably outages from 2degrees that haven't made the news. These can happen for a variety of reasons including maintenance and simple faults. In most casues people simply don't know because they have overlapping coverage from multiple sites.

Pretty much this.  However, it's important to remember that most end users don't make distinctions between reasons for loss of service, they clump everything together based on the given service provider as some nebulous "quality of service" perception.  It doesn't matter if an issue is mobile and the result of a cell site losing power, or landline based and the result of a car taking out a cabinet, most people (including the media) treat events like that as having the same underlying cause, i.e. "Something something Telecom."  We saw this with the recent 111 call centre issues, which had nothing to do with XT but were breathlessly conflated together by reports.

Vodafone's certainly not in the gun right now with the general public, and I can't see how this particular issue is significant enough to gain widespread attention in the same way that the XT issues did.
