One of the issues Is is it worth blacklisting a phone? I seem to recall reading somewhere but I can't find it now. It was along the lines of if you blacklist a phone with Vodafone somebody could just put in a 2 degrees SIM and carry on using the phone. Is this correct or is my memory faulty?

It's always a good idea to keep your receipt.... in the past, i've had many phones break and have had to get them fixed under warranty.

What is a IMEI anyway? I didn't know Vodaofne could block a phone from working.... i knew they could block a SIM card from working but not an actual phone???

Mobile carriers in NZ do not share EIR INFO at this stage

I see, so if the network can block a IMEI, can they then tell what model phone you are using based on your IMEI code? So they could tell how many people use iphones vs nokias for example? Or don't the manufactures tell Vodafone what IMEI codes belong to each type of phone?

And what's EIR INFO?

EIR is the networks Equipment Identity Register which is a list of all devices connected to the network and those that have been blacklisted to put it simply.

Quite simply yes the network provider will have records of all the phones that have used that network and through the IMEI numbers can work out if a phone is a nokia 5800 express music or a iphone 3Gs. there are lots of websites you can put an IMEI number into and it will give you all the info.

I had a friend who tried to claim his handset insurance on his phone through Vodafone, but he had just given it to his mate cause he wanted a new phone. Vodafone just did a look up and saw that he had swapped the sim out and it was being used by a new sim. Hence they didn't pay out, it doesnt pay to lie.

Well like 6 years ago or so me and a mate got mugged and I had my Nokia 1100 nicked (that was the best phone I'd ever had <3) and we luckily had the box and receipt for it and Vodafone blocked it completely before they even sent a single text. How come I got it blocked really quickly but that other guy who posted earlier had to wait months or something? That's one of the reasons I stayed on Vodafone instead of switching when I had the chance because these were the good 'ol days when everyone only texted on the weekends when "free txt weekend" was still on. Ahhh I miss that

tardtasticx, I think you are confusing the blocking of your sim with blocking of a phone.

Vodafone will block your sim at your request.

Since network operators don't share EIR info, will a phone blacklisted on vodafone - now with a 2 degrees SIM inserted be able to roam to Vodafone 2G when in non-urban areas?

Since they don't share the phone blocking info I guess the question is if you have proof of address etc can you goto Telecom and 2degrees and get the phone blocked so it would only be useful overseas? Or will the company you are with do the block only?
