insane: Indeed, I believe a whole host of retailers are still making use of dialup based EFTPOS terminals.

While the DSL based EFTPOS is far faster, it is by no means more reliable so dialup still has its place. Its also rather handy for those cisco out of band dial in devices used to administer remote equipment.

Dialup EFTPOS works fine over VoIP providing you're using uncompressed codecs (ie ulaw or alaw).

The issue isn't one that modems can't work at all over VoIP as ulaw/alaw have been the core of the digital phone world for decaudes. The problem is one of reliability over VoIP networks where many people are looking at low bitrate codecs such as G729 and where issues such as jitter and packet loss have to be factored in.

My parents got a similar email from TelstraClear.

They were paying $10 per month for an old paradise dialup plan.

TC claim that due to law changes with credit cards they can't offer this any more (sounds like BS but....)

The options were
- broadband
- transfer phone line & calling to TC and pay $3.95 a month for clear dialup with email forwarding from their old address

Since they use phone cards for calling and my mum is too tight to get broadband they are going with the second option.

It sounds to me like TC are doing a cleanup of old billing systems and moving customers off them.

It will be interesting if paradise dial-up is going to be withdrawn.  I have a dial up account with paradise which my mum mainly uses, but also serves to keep various paradise email accounts alive.  If paradise dial up is going to be withdrawn I had better pull finger and get everyone transferred to gmail accounts.

Can someone from telstra confirm whether or not paradise dial up is going to be generally withdrawn, and if so the timeframe?

Not sure where you got the notion that TelstraClear is no longer selling dialup.
http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/homeplan/internet/dial-up/

Also not sure where the notion that dialup wont work on an LLU line comes from. It does. From a fequency modulation perspective, there is no meaningful difference between TelstraClear's analogue phone service and Telecom's NEAX switches...

I'd hate to ruin your day but there is a significant difference and dialup will not work reliably on a LLU connection.

Whereas all TCL phonelines where either supplied from their own Nortel switch in Wgtn/Chch or Telecom  wholesale services provided from the NEAX's all new LLU plans are now delivered as POTS but are infact a VoIP service delivered from voice linecards in the ISAM back to a Broadsoft switch.

Dialup is a dead product as more and more providers move towards full NGN networks. While modem support over a perlect ulaw or alaw connection is possible the reality is that it's highly unlikely to work reliably.

sbiddle, your post is 99% incorrect, you should be wary of anything whoever told you this says in future.

Disclosure: I worked on the LLU implementation project (specifically on regression testing (including dialup)).

quickymart: My stepmum was told that Paradise are only supplying dialup if you have a landline with TCL now. She doesn't want/need one, so I've sourced a different e-mail address for her.

Seems unless you move your landline to TCL, they don't want your business anymore as a dialup customer (for Paradise, anyway). A shame.

i think this is the same situation.  the line is still with telecom, not a ULL line.

It sounds like they just want to move people off Paradise dialup - if you take this landline option, you need to be with Clear instead. Probably easier to support one ISP and have to manage one billing system, etc. I know when I worked there it was a nightmare with all the different systems.

I just got a query from someone else on a Paradise account about this. They have just moved to a non-TC broadband option, and are now concerned about their Paradise email account. Is there an option to keep a Paradise email address at TC without having to switch the homeline and calling to TC?

My dad has a Paradise email address (was originally dialup but was migrated to DSL back in 2001). Late last year or early this year he tried to change his plan and TCL told him that he'll need to change to a Clear email address or pay extra to keep the Paradise address.

They've subsequently relented and let him change to a new plan, but keep his Paradise address with no extra charge. It looks like they're gradually trying to move everyone away from Paradise, but it looks like it'll still be around for some time yet.

Nope, doesn't look like it.

Sounds like a good time to register a domain for them (<$25 per year) and set them up with google apps for domains standard for their email (free) so they will not have this problem in future when changing ISP's.

Well, I have just received the same email tonight as outlined earlier........

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR PARADISE DIAL UP INTERNET

We have reviewed our internet services and due to the changes in the law for handling credit card payments, regrettably we will soon be discontinuing your credit card billed Paradise Dial Up account.

This means that from 30 June 2010 you will no longer be able to use your Paradise Dial Up internet or access your Paradise email.

To help you in this process, we have outlined below two plans for your consideration that we hope might be suitable for you moving forward.

$3.95 Dial Up internet: Pay only $3.95 per month for unlimited Clearnet Dial Up usage, up to five email addresses and free virus and spam protection.
Broadband: There's a variety of usage plans available and to make the move to broadband even easier we'll give you your first month FREE!
To get either of these great offers, simply move your phone line and calling to TelstraClear for 12 months and create a new @clear.net.nz email address.

It had to happen sooner or later. They have been proxying the paradise addresses for some time now.

Heh, I'm sure I saw a recent spiel from TC that they now accept CC payments Wink So all of a sudden there's some law change and they can't handle payments for Paradise, but can for TC? Oookayyyyyyyyy
Should just fess up and say they can't be stuffed mucking around with Paradise any more.

Probably the billing system isnt compliant with the requirements for computer storage of credit card details so it is easier to close it than change it.

Someone should call them on it and offer to pay for the next 2 years of their account this month on their credit card before the law changes and see what they say :-)

All I can say is THANK GOD TelstraClear are finally cleaning up their internal billing systems. What a horrific mess they are. I remember they tried to charge me my domain renewal every month then after 3 months of getting it corrected they never charged me again for it :-) Go the free.
