On Lokeynz's advice about the chipset I tried a Thomson 536v6 and my upload speed went from 480 to 924kbps:

So I guess that means the house wiring is fine.
Is there any thing that can be done at the cabinet end (a configuration change or something) so I can continue using my Linksys modem but with a decent upload speed? Or is the only option here to use a modem with a Broadcom chipset?
Doubt you will get telecom to make any changes, there is no need, also keep in mind that Alcatel ISAMs provide something like 70% of the worlds DSL ports, so may as well just use the most compatible solution.

While I do agree with this statement, part of the problem (as I see it) is that xnet list "certified hardware" for use with their service, so I expect the products that they "certify" to be up to the job. http://www.xnet.co.nz/vfx/hardware.shtml
Oh well, time to buy a better modem (I thought I was past the days of crappy hardware problems when I got rid of the zyxel!)
Various brands, including Linksys are known for not syncing to full speed particularly on uplink, seems the two ends dont quite train one another properly, easier to just get a matching modem, TP-Link8840 is a good option, if your linksys had wireless ability then keep it as an AP,
I also bought a new modem over the weekend, a TP-Link 8840, recommended by 'lokeynz', and wouldn't you know it my upload sync speeds jumped from aprox 500kbps to 900! I also got to try out the DSL Modem Tool (DMT), which is fun to play with and I managed to increase my download sync speed too.
And a speedtest confirmed the increased speeds.
I paid $65 for the modem, which I feel is far far better than having to deal with Vodafone's broadband helpdesk.

It's just a real shame this is not advertised or even known by the helpdesk staff, and it took me quite a while to figure this out. Without geekzone I don't think I would have managed to fix it at all.
Hi, catdog, I've been looking into this issue, I think the fact that you are so close to the exchange could be causing it, if possible could you test the AG310 plugged in through an extension cable (the longer the better) on ADSL2+ multiplexing and see if the upload jumps up ? Also if anyone else on Xnet has this problem, could you PM me with your account number or username, modem model and modem dsl stats if possible, the more examples I can get the better. Cheers.
Adding an extension cable to the AG310 doesn't make any significant difference to the upload sync rate. I tried 1, 3, and 5 extension cables connected together with the results below (I'd guess each cable is about 5m long, so ~25m in total for all 5)

I saw the issue the last time around and dismissed it as the reported issues were very contradictory, (customers reporting full speed upstream in among other speeds like 200,600,900 etc )and a lot of the posts were not really a cause for concern from what I could see given the attenuation or SNR figures reported.
I am still not entirely convinced a real issue exists, but I am happy to work on checking if this hypothesis stands up to some investigation - (I have been workung with Grudge and Shade on this already)
A couple of things: 1) 1Mbs is the max upstream for ADSL2+ A possible test could be to set to ADSL2 as this has a 1.3Mbps upstream rate. (I have seen a bunch of comments seeming to fret about some top upstream speeds, and they are not a fault of course). 2) From what I have seen, upstream can be more sensitive to noise issues 3) I seem to recall that 900k upstream may be some soft limit on the old firmware? but need to confirm if this is true - if so upgrades will be on the way.. 4) A lot of these examples are fairly close to the DSLAM - more examples would be awesome ESPECIALLY with interleaving included (if you dont know where to get the details out of the modem, it should be on my dslmodems section) 4) Exension cables when tested typically attenuates the signal at about 3dB per 10 m of extension (from EZAS testing) 5) I have heard some people saying a hypothesis that this is a similar fault to say a Dlink where the synch rate is getting locked up at a set rate, but that is just rubbish, as that issue relates to a set synch speed, which we are certainly not seeing here.
What I am going to do is try to look into the correlation between the routers I know to be Broadcom and the speeds we see reported.
I have done a search of my modem database from my site, and the following brands of router are Broadcom Chipset (According to the research I have done, and people inputting into the data, so should be correct).
