Oh I'd disagree (about handset subsidies). The new iPhone, for example, is retailed for over $1,000, yet customers can get it for less than half that on a plan. The Nexus One is in a similar position.

Customers may not want or be able to pay $1000+ up front, yet they've walked away with a device.

Paul, are these new plans essentially the same as the previous TXTer/Talker 60 plans except for the contracted term?

The one-month version is exactly the same (but for contract length). If you want to go on the 12 month version (so half the original contract length) you get 50% more TXTs.

There's been some press about it, Mauricio... I'll show you a picture next time I'm down that way. ;-)

freitasm: I have to say I am happy to see Vodafone coming with a no long term commitment plan. A few years ago all term contracts were scrapped but then the company took new directions and they reverted that position.

Tis funny how things come full circle.

IIRC Vodafone was the first in New Zealand to have no-term contracts generally across the board. These were a point of difference at the time. Then (I think as a result of not being able to lock handsets) there was a silent migration to term contracts of 24 months (yuck!) and then 12 months for some plans.

Meanwhile Telecom now has all XT plans as no-term unless I'm mistaken! Special plans excepted, and you can choose to contract for 12 or 24 months but for a pathetic handset subsidy in my opinion ($40 for 12 or $80 for 24 months).

I hope you don't mind me asking but are there current plans to allow those already on 24 month contracts (some of whom may have just signed up very recently) to go onto an open-term option instead, or even "re-sign" onto a 12 month contract - if they repay any handset subsidy they may have received (as an "early termination charge" if you will).

I know that this is outside the terms of the original contract but Vodafone surely has the right to change the terms in the favour of the customer if they had the will

For the record I'm not in that position.

If they're happy to pay the ETC then there shouldn't be a problem... that's what the ETCs are for!

Paul i would say that he wants to know if Vodafone will give an exemption to the ETC in cases where people are already on the current Talker 60 or TXTer 60 plans and may have just signed up within the last month or so for a 24 month term, but would now rather be on the new SIMple Talker 60 or SIMple TXTer 60 plan.

will you provide an exemption?

Probably not too many affected to be honest, and always a risk when you sign up to a contract (hence the cautiousness of many).

ETC for 0-18 months appears to be $160 (plus GST?? - see below) for that contract so losing $40-60 (depending on GST situation) if you needed to break out isn't too bad I guess. Feel a bit more sorry for those that just signed up recently without a handset subsidy and got 10 minutes free per month instead while those contracting to 12 months are getting 30 minutes more!

Would be nice if Vodafone gave people a "free" passout by aligning the ETC with the $120 subsidy but it's not often telecos are so generous

Just a side note - those ETCs on the page I am looking at for TXTer 60 don't mention GST at all? So why would those be GST inclusive while iPhone ETCs are GST exclusive?

I am up your way tomorrow for the 2degrees press event, then again on Thursday for the Telecom press event. Interestingly it seems I never get to any Vodafone press event.
