jjero: My you choose contract with vodafone has ended and am looking at all the options and want data on my plan.

With vodafone: $40 per month gets you 250mb after september 1, 300 txts and 30 minutes. Plus you're locked into a contract for 24 months

Equivalent plan with 2degrees: $20 for 512mb, $10 for 100txts, $12.20 (0.44c*30) 30minutes = $42.20 for double the data, 3.3 times the texts and same minutes, plus this is prepay.

???? I'm confused. The only advantage I can see is that there is a much greater 3G coverage with vodafone. Why would anyone choose the vodafone plan after the 3gb promo ends?

Am I missing something?

Here is another analysis:

Vodafone iPhone 40 plan: $40 per month for 24 months
Cost of iPhone 4: $619
Total cost: $1579

2degrees over 24 months
$10 text: $240
30 minutes of calls: $316.80
250 of data (24 x 5 x 50 MB x $6 outside Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown): $720
iPhone 4: $1099
Total cost: $2375.80

And for the privilege of supporting 2degrees and paying more, I don't get to have Vodafone Family.

I think the 24 month smart plan adds a lot of value like all other plans - as long as you use up all the minutes/texts/data and you know your usage for the next 2 years.

Personally, I'm not certain enough about what my usage is or where I'll be in the next year, let alone two, so I'm hesitant about committing to 2 year contracts! But the handset subsidy looks good, and the smart plan adds value. Definitely something to consider.

But, you don't pay for what you don't use and you get the benefit of any specials/price changes along the way, not to mention your free to leave at any time.

This in itself would quite possibly bring the cost below Vodafone.

Overall this is why i don't get a on account plan. They make it sound good buy throwing figures out there but i do wonder how many people actually use all their benefits.

Top up $30 a month , this gives you 300 texts for free. which is the same as the iphone $40 plan

for e.g. in auckland i could buy 20$ worth of data , and use 10$ for calling (which could give you anywhere from 20-40 minutes of calling depending on landline/2degrees/telecom/vodafone)

this would give a total ownership cost of $1819

Here is my view of 2degrees over 24 months
Topup $50 per month = $1200

512/(1GB data for now) = $20/mo inclusive in $50
500 texts = FREE/mo
$30 to spend on calls... This can be 136 min 2d/landline or 68 minutes to anyone.

+ iphone 4 $1099
Total cost = $2299

Lets compare my $40 on vf iphone 40 plan.
30 minutes
300 txt
250 meg

2degrees
100 minutes ($30 bundle)
400 txt
100 Meg (pay an extra $10 and get 512 mb)

Yeah, I remember feeling sorry for the people who signed up for the 24 month TXTer60/Talker60 plans when Vodafone unveiled their Simple plans - no contract term for the exact price or double their minutes for a 12 month contract. Either way, they would've been better off on the Simple plans unless there was a very significant handset subsidy.
