Aha... thought $300 was a little steep.

Telecom only increased it's wiring charges recently though..most of the cost is really due to Compliance with the horrid councils we have here.

Our prices are pretty much based on overseas. Of course, this will all change with NextGen.. Coming soon :-D

Who remembers that cable network Telecom used to have in Taupo and all the fibre lacing Pakuranga? any idea what all that is?

The First Media Hybrid Fibre-Coax network? Telecom decommissioned that, but not sure if all the cables were yanked out of the ground or just the access stations.

Any online documentation about it? I'd like to read about it and what killed it.

One of the engineers behind the network had a page on it somewhere on the web, but I can't find it anymore.

Seems the whole deal backfired badly on Ericsson:

It probably didn't fit into how Telecom wanted to do business at the time. ADSL is much more telco-style tech, but it'd be interesting to find out why Saturn is still going but First Media got canned.

The access stations are still there. The cables must be... I tore (removed lid carefully as the lock had been broken by some kids) the top off one the other day and took a peekand it's all there... Wonder if there is any signal?

Remember Ihug Digital TV.. that wasn't about for long.. I have a feeling Woosh will quietly dissappear like they did.

I just found this site.. very interesting read!

Taupo wasn't Telecom was it? Their HFC network was rolled out in many part of Wgtn using overhead cable in Silverstream, Thorndon, Northland and Wadestown areas and they put it underground in parts of Lower Hutt and Whitby. They have long since pulled the overhead cable down but all the little green boxes are still around the Hutt and Whitby. It's always surprised me somebody didn't try and buy the network dirt cheap and roll out Internet access over it, Whitby is quite a large area.

You might find that someone WONT sell the network.

Kinda like Telstra would rather pull down CDMA in Australia than sell it off.

If I COULD buy that network, i'd be a sinch to run a VoIP and Internet network off it!
