sultanoswing: Yay. VDSL2. We all get to use up our data caps or data-by-the-dollar even faster than now.

How? You'll only use a bigger cap if your surfing habits change significantly.

While technically true, why would anyone upgrade to VDSL2 is there was not a need for faster data transfer and more of it?

Blowing through your data cap in 15 minutes will literally be a reality. :-0

Its not so much a need for faster transfer of data persay, more that we are using more devices at every connection that needs a bigger pipe.

One of the biggest appeals for VDSL2 is the faster upload speeds. People aren't necessarily using more data, but are finding cloud based applications a lot faster.

Maybe these better speeds could result in more data use, but that's only if your habits change, ie faster uploads meaning you now use the internet for backups rather than physical media.

I would go for VDSL2+ just for the gain in upload speed. At the moment, 100K/s up is not very good considering I have a download speed of 1.7MB/s.

Maybe then HD video conferencing would be feasible too.

i haven't seen this mentioned in the thread but when vdsl2 will be available, everyone who wants to get on it will have to also purchase a vdsl2+ modem.

And it's highly highly highly advised to have a VDSL2 splitter installed as well.

Telecom is not intending to launch it fully till the new year, its currently on soft launch which means ISPs can subscribe to it but for staff/staff friends to sign up to only, this lets ISPs get a feel for the product and design plans to go with it ready for the full launch early next year, thats a couple of months away incase you had not noticed.

I know Telecom will be supplying a modem for their retail plans, I presume most other ISPs will be doing like wise rather than allowing you to purchase modems on the high street like you can with ADSL, but eventually once the training wheels are off it will be a similar situation where you have the option of supported modems from your ISP or high street and on your own.

Edit, and yes to backup Cymro you will need a splitter (unless with Naked plans but still a clean line setup), if you have ever done a PET test (TDR) on a house's wiring and extended the span out 10MHz or so you will see how issues rapidly ramp up compared to 1-2MHz as with ADSL1/2+, so house cabling must be upto scratch.

The provision of modems will be interesting.

As a user running ADSL2+ PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough on my dreytek vigor 100, in order that I can run a decent router-only box (WRT54GS with tomato), I hope that this will remain possible in future once / if VDSL2 rolls out more generally.

VDSL2 services dont have any ATM aspect, therefore as I understand it AAA will be via PPPoE meaning using any modem as simply a bridge should be much easier even if it contains a NAT aspect.

Yeah if VDSL2 is PPPoE than it's going to be easy to bridge to a 2nd router. DD-WRT and Tomato etc have a PPPoE client option for the WAN interface so no problem there.

PPPoE bridging is a much more common feature than PPPoA half bridging in DSL modems so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi, well the Telecom wholesale WVS product sheet clearly states PPPoE is the interface, so all good.

The Telstra VDSL2 Connections are very affordable for linking two sites due to the upload speeds. The telstra ones are also only delivered as a naked connection.

Is there any chance of worldexchange reselling Telstra VDSL connections?

I ask as if you've got more then 5 VoIP phone lines coming into the site then the upload speeds of ADSL is often not good enoth.

I would love to be able to offer telstra VDSL connections with WxC VoIP lines for sites with more then five lines.
