hairy1: John, Is whether you can get naked done by exchange or by distance from the exchange? It appears that no-one can answer why some people can get it and others can't?

My parents could get it in Taupo if they wanted and they are rural delivery but I can't living in the middle of Pukekohe.....

Cheers, Matt.

Pukekohe is considered a rural exchange and Taupo is not

John

I have been trying to get naked BB in Taupo for a while but every company says that we are rural. I live in a new house with a brand new (2yrs old, they y were putting it in just before the house was finished). How is it that when I tried vodafone they said no. I wanted to go with them as they would give me a discount because of my mobile contract.

I thought the term had changed from rural to low density area or something so that people who were in "cities" didnt get upset by being called rural?

Well it would depend on the part of Taupo you live in and what exchange the copper is connected to,

The age of your house does not determine if you can have naked BB or not its the exchange the copper connects to

I live on the outskirts of Invercargill and I get Voda naked, but the supermarket 2 blocks away won't deliver perishables as I'm too rural. Who knows how these corporate types work?

They have to draw a line somewhere.

Friends work is just outside the sals delivery area. Should I ask them to make an exception for me? If they did, why not the person another 100m down the road from me etc etc?

You may find if you approach your courier that does deliver the cold goods for countdown that you might actually be within the area that they service but there was a mistake, or they might just not drive that way so it would be an additional 4 blocks of driving with some traffic challenges to deal with.

I was told by a CSR when signing up for vodafone broadband that you can only get naked broadband in areas where vodafone have their own equipment in the exchange.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

It's not up to the carriers what is classed as rural

So is there any list of exchanges that are able to supply naked BB? the link above doesn't lead anywhere.

The reason I am so interested is the only reason that we have a phone line is to get a net connection. We maybe use the phone once a month.

Yeah, I never knew either so used to just say that we could apply for the urban service and see if it's accepted. Try another provider, they may have an alternative price for "rural" naked dsl that basically makes it cheaper to get it combined with phone service. Still useful to have a phone service sometimes anyway, for not too much extra. Maybe ask Worldxchange since they only do naked dsl?

Time to find a new industry!

I find myself still a tad confused as to the criteria that determine whether Naked is available or not.

It would make sense to base this on the capability to deliver a reliable service that maintains data throughput at a reasonable (say minimum 1.5Mbps at all times), rather than the classifications alluded to in this thread.

In my case Vodafone gave me Naked DSL in a situation where this was not a good idea and the service could not deliver a standard such as that I have suggested (which I wasn't told beforehand of course).

I moved to Huia (West Auckland) and got Naked DSL connected in only to learn (after it was connected) that the place is served by a Conklin that has 4Mbps backhaul and can connect up to 60 users (not sure of the actual number, but I suspect it's on the fuller side of half capacity). Consequently as soon as the locals jump online on evenings and certain times of the weekend, the net slowed so much that even VoIP calls would break up and get so much delay it ws useless (regardless of codec and compression settings, over both WXC and 2Talk services and both an ATA and HG556a Vodafone modem).

Vodafone, to their credit took ownership of this , and put me back onto a standard phone and ADSL package without charging provisioning costs or contract break fees.

However all that could have been avoided if the equipment and backhaul situation had been considered and disclosed at point of sale.

No, the problem is that pieces of crap like the conklin should have been scrapped many many years ago, but that never happened because telecom would have been hanging onto it for as long as possible with that obsolete underperforming kit on the hope that the govt would come along with a massive cheque and pay to have something better and flasher put in, which will slowly happen as we get the bribe from the last election rolled out.
