alasta: Can anyone clarify whether it's necessary to sign up for a 24 month contract in order to take up this offer? I understand that the deal on the hardware only applies to 24 month contracts, but it's not clear whether the $50+GST pricing plan can be taken up on an open term basis.

Yes it can.

*Offer available from 10th April 2006 to 9th July 2006. Offer entitles the customer to 1GB of data for $49 +gst per month. Offer applies to existing VMC customers and new customers who sign up to an open term VMC contract or 24 month term VMC contract & hardware subsidy.

sibddle: The Merlin U740 is HSDPA compliant. I was under the impression that some of the new VMC cards being sold in NZ were these new cards rather than the U630 but this doesn't appear to be the case.

I am not 100% on the availability of the U740 in NZ, I was quoting from our suppliers stock sheet, the U630 is the only one listed. Also the VF website lists the U630 as the VMC card.

It seems to be "existing customers already on the plan get changed over."

New customers must sign a 24 month term to get the special pricing or pay a $400 "setup cost". (even if hardware is supplied)

the 1GB plan used to have a "fair use policy if you went over" now it's $0.50c a meg after 1GB is used up.

The use of Mobilise Data plans for Voice over IP (VoIP) is excluded. end of that idea,,, typical.

I think you are missing some key words here.

Offer applies to existing VMC customers and new customers who sign up to an open term VMC contract or 24 month term VMC contract & hardware subsidy.

And as for paying $0.50 a meg, dude seriously its $100 cheaper!

The extra 50c a meg doesn't worry me at all, Just that contract.

I spoke to 3 people and they all said there's either the $400 setup charge (they give you a datacard regardless) or a 24 month term

I'd also be on a "you choose" plan if they wiped the 24 month contract.

I'd love to hook up on it, It'll wipe out my unreliable, clunky woosh connection I can't use while moving.

If you own a VMC card there is no extra cost, you can sign up open term, the $400 is for the VMC card. If you don't need the card you don't pay $400.

These terms and conditions are in addition to the existing Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) Terms and Conditions.
Offer is only available from 10th April 2006 to 9th July 2006.
This offer can not be used in conjunction with any other Vodafone New Zealand promotional offer on data pricing plans. Offer entitles the customer to 1GB of data for $49 + GST per month.

The VMC $49 + GST offer applies to:

Existing Vodafone Mobile Connect customers and;
New customers who sign up to an open term VMC contract or 24 month term VMC contract & hardware subsidy
The free VMC data card offer (hardware subsidy) is only available with a 24 month term contract.
Charges of $0.50 per MB +GST for out of bundle usage over monthly data allocation apply

The monthly access fee of $49 + GST will apply until:

The plan is terminated by the customer
The customer transfers to another data plan
The 24 month term expires
Vodafone reserves the right to transfer customers on open-term VMC plans after a period of 24 months to a similar plan

All prices exclude GST except where otherwise stated.

Billing increments are in 10KB blocks with a minimum 10KB charge.

No... Worse..

777. first rep had no idea and gave me activations fax number when I asked for the data specialists, Second one said it was on a 24 month contract only (was reading a script)
0800 921 021 helped more than 777 did, still weren't clear and actually suggested I see a store to be sure and admitted they did not have full info on pricing, Nice guy.

(though I totally understand data team guys not knowing, they are a tech support helpdesk, not pricingplan specialists)

Do you know how to get my mobile number back that started with 8? apparently that number range is "frozen"

I'm off to a store now to try my luck. I doubt i'll see any issues.

This has always been in the T&C's since they launched 3G. They are not blocking port 5060 though so there isn't much they can do to stop you! :-)

I've actually spent quite a bit of time playing with VoIP over a 3G connection and was surprised how well it worked. I was using G.729 as the codec and to be completely honest it performed better than G.729 does over most ADSL connections that I have tried!

Maybe they are worried that this promo could double the number of VMC users from 1 to 2 and could impact on network loading! :-)

I dont think anyone should worry about the price only being valid for 24 months.... look at the last 24 months of mobile data pricing, and think to yourself,

"realistically, what will pricing be in 2 years?"

I should think you will be coming up with figures like 2 or 5GB for $50 a month.....

Its a good offer, well done Vodafone - sticking to their "leading, not following" mantra by the looks of things.
