Just a reminder without trying to wind you up that a forum of a website is not helping me achieve my goals towards a career where as uni is, there wouldnt be anyone who would use "txt" text in papers just yet, lets just wait untill it becomes part of the english language.

Basically, they "rent" part of Vodafone's or Telecom's network, using all their infrastructure, but provide their own services.

Mobile has similar analogies to broadband. While the idea of UBS, ISPs piggy-backing on telecom's network might have failed to encourage competition and cheaper faster broadband, our mobile networks in NZ are different.

We have 2 operators. Both Vodafone and telecom would want to encourage MVNOs, and attract MVNOs to their own "camp", since they will earn revenue as well. AND, competition would be stimulated, not only directly between MVNOs and the 2 telcos, but also between the 2 telcos themselves, to offer a best rate to MVNOs to attract them to startup with them.

Perhaps a good example of MVNO would be www.easymobile.com It offers a no frills mobile service (no shops, all online, you just receive a SIM in the mail), and it comes with cheap rates. If we have just have 2 MVNOs operating in NZ in addition to the 2 telcos, it will defintely encourage competition and bring prices down, without affecting investment or business prospects for telecom or vodafone.

From what I hear, I believe Vodafone have a "blanket ban" worldwide on this issue (although we do have Telstra here, providing Vodafone Services under the Telstra Banner). I would only expect to see this if regulation was introduced by government, and in Telecoms case it is highly unlikely another operator will adopt the CDMA standard. Also Vodafone and Telecom are not likely to take this sort of threat by any Government sitting down.

I think you would expect people who run it and who visit it (70% at least) to be pedantic, anal retentive nerds.

Vodafone are the bearer for numerous MVNO's worldwide. TelstraClear's NZ mobile network is a partial MVNO, they just don't have their own voicemail etc.

Nope, lol is not SMS lingo, it's part of the Internet since old days.

No, not pedantic. Just making rules so we all have a common denominator when it comes to understanding the nerdiness of each other.

By the way, we are not nerds. We are geeks. This was discussed at length before, and there's a huge difference.

Yeah, so why aren't there more MVNOs in NZ? And why doesn't Telstra heat things up a little with their 029, unless they're barred from doing that by their deal with Vodafone?

I think it's regrettable that Telecom doesn't use GSM, not because of technology-wise (that'll be another thread), but simply because GSM handsets and users are used to the idea of swapping sim cards easily... So, just 2 mobile operators, and perhaps 2 MVNOs in NZ would surely introduce some much needed healthy competition into the market.

MVNOs are easy to setup, not too much infrastructure, not too much capital hence, and less opposed by mobile companies. Just take Hong Kong as an example... One of the most vibrant mobile communities. Only three 3G licences issued, about 3 more companies run as MVNOs.... And there's fantastic competition and choice for the population of 8 million.
